itxtme: Germany has the biggest GDP in Europe. Germany made that GDP with cheap Russian gas continuing to be the key European manufacturing hub. Germany was weak against Russia in 2014, and in fact built another (since destroyed) gas pipe line despite the annexation of Crimea.
I would say it was more misguided than weak. Naïvely former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel may have believed Russia would eventually embrace peace and stability.
She never seemed to see Putin as the psychopath he is.
Either a sunk cost dilemma or perhaps it was a co-dependency relationship
