Also, as per post early on, Godwin's Law is not enforced in this thread.

Probably a good thing too. Trump distracting himself from reality with golf as things fall apart around him reminds me of nothing so much as Hitler distracting himself with architectural models of Linz while the Red Army was closing in. That's not a Godwin thing, it's just the most appropriate historical precedent for Trump's recent behaviour.

So are we now again allowed to call public figures by nicknames (insulting or otherwise) and first names? Or is it only figures we don't like?

I'm glad we can now refer to Jacinda, Winston, and Judith by their first names, as people do in the real world without any malicious intent.

😛

Are you asking me?  I don't make the rules around here.

Trump and certain members of his administration and his "cult 45" haven't earned respect, and have aggressively rejected the concept of mutual respect, locally (in the USA) and globally. IOW they deserve none in return.

Nah, wasn't asking, more just making a smartarse comment :)

Agreed regarding their not deserving respect.

Not meant as an argument point or anything but just an observation, the PM herself seems to prefer just "Jacinda". "Madam Prime Minister" is right out :-).

Seems he has said he will cooperate but still fight on. That's fine, transition moves ahead, he can spend his time and US money on the courts while real people do real things for a change

US President Donald Trump, who had refused to concede the election, now says that he is directing his team to co-operate on the transition to power for President-elect Joe Biden – but is vowing to keep up the fight.

Good to see that some parts of the US government still function properly. As well as the benefits of an independent civil service - for all its bureaucratic faults and inefficiencies, sometimes that separation is a good thing.

1n 2015 Godwin said : "If you're thoughtful about it and show some real awareness of history, go ahead and refer to Hitler when you talk about Trump, or any other politician."

My understanding of the name thing has always been that it is just a matter of respect. I have a weakness for name jokes myself and have overstepped this more than once when succumbing to temptation in regard to certain politicians, but I understand and accept the reasons for it. The problem is made worse with female politicians because of the misogyny that gets mixed up with the political insult, which is why it is better not to go there at all. I do feel that an exception can be made for political figures who by their actions and words have absolved themselves of any right to be treated respectfully, and bullsh¡t Barbie certainly meets that standard, along with her fascist imbecilic evil leering grossly overweight employer.

So GSA says they weren't pressured or instructed one way or the other. Trump implies they are allowing the transition to begin on his directive "for the good of the country".

So which is it?

EDIT: Trumps tweets about it read like they were written by someone more articulate, who just threw in some all caps and exclamation marks to make it look like Trump wrote them.

But isn't that just saying "I respect everyone, unless I don't think they deserve it"?

When someone gives you permission, then it's okay. The issue is when you take liberties, especially with nicknames.

Yep, definitely, especially when they really don't deserve it.

Trump is clearly trying to back out of the corner he has painted himself into while feebly attempting to pretend he isn't. This is his declaration of surrender. He has finally accepted defeat, though he will never admit it.
