Thanks, I was just wondering what on earth he could use as a defense for his actions in the event he's summoned to court to explain what happened (which is a possibility, right?)
Interesting to see the title of the Wikipedia article on the day's events is the "Storming" of the capitol. I would have gone with 'Putsch' but apparently it's a 'storming'.
I have to wonder, and I'm sure others do as well, if the police presence was intentionally held back in the hope that the coup would succeed. I hope this gets properly investigated.
Plesse igmore amd axxept applogies in adbance fir anu typos
The Washington Post - Opinion - There’s no time to impeach Trump. Censure him instead.
today
by David E. Kendall - a lawyer at Williams & Connolly, who has represented both Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Given the shortness of time before President Trump is out of office, congressional censure is the best way to stigmatize the soon-to-be former president for his despicable actions in fomenting a mob attack on Congress at the very moment legislators were carrying out their constitutional duties to certify the will of American voters.
Censure, a formal congressional condemnation, has been successfully invoked against sitting presidents.
While admittedly symbolic, it is what is needed at this moment: an immediate bipartisan judgment that is strong, unequivocal, indelible and undeniable, a clear judgment that Trump’s conduct was a profound betrayal of both his duty and the basic legal rules of our democratic republic.
Different courses of action toward this goal are available, but only censure holds any real chance of imminent success.
The 25th Amendment is a nonstarter ... because an invertebrate vice president and supine Cabinet will not initiate it. ...
I like the "invertebrate vice president" comment - much more polite than "spineless" or "toady". 😉

did Trump actually say "go storm the Capitol" or was it just a bunch of thugs who put 2 and 2 together and decided to take matters into their own hands?

I feel a JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald conspiracy coming on. Was it the Cosa Nostra?, Was it Castro?, was it the military industrial complex?, the CIA?, and on and on and on.
In this case: was it Nancy Pelosi wanting another go at impeachment?, was it Centre-Left leaning Republicans seeing the destruction of the GOP?, was it a White House insider?, was it AG William Barr, was it the CIA? (again - think JFK).
I feel a plethora of books coming on. 👽
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
The thing about impeachment is, if it is successful. He will lose not just the last few days of his presidency but also access to the perks an ex-president gets. This includes a $200k per year pension, state-funded travel, security briefings and even the round the clock secret service detail.

This traitorous piece of crap Eric Gavelek Munchel has been arrested, as well as Larry Rendell Brock (press release).
Two men were charged today in federal court in the District of Columbia in connection with the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.
Larry Rendell Brock, of Texas, was charged with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. Brock was arrested today in Texas.
It is alleged that Brock was identified as one of the individuals who unlawfully entered the U.S. Capitol wearing a green helmet, green tactical vest with patches, black and camo jacket, and beige pants holding a white flex cuff, which is used by law enforcement to restrain and/or detain subjects.
Eric Gavelek Munchel, of Tennessee, was charged with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. Munchel was arrested today in Tennessee.
It is alleged that Munchel was inside of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Photos depicting his presence show a person who appears to be Munchel carrying plastic restraints, an item in a holster on his right hip, and a cell phone mounted on his chest with the camera facing outward, ostensibly to record events that day.
These cases are being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Counterterrorism Section of the DOJ’s National Security Division, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee. The cases are being investigated by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, the FBI’s Dallas Field Office, the FBI’s Memphis Field Office and the United States Capitol Police.
The information contained in the charging documents are merely allegations. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The ATF and FBI continue to urge the public to report suspected use of explosive devices, or violent, destructive acts associated with the recent unrest. Anyone with information can call 1-888-ATF-TIPS (1-888-283-8477), email ATFTips@atf.gov or submit information anonymously via ReportIt.com.
The FBI is looking for individuals who may have incited or promoted violence of any kind. Anyone with digital material or tips can call 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or submit images or videos at fbi.gov/USCapitol.

"People who broke into the Capitol Wednesday are now learning they are on No-Fly lists pending the full investigation. They are not happy about this."
Who would have thought you can't just mount an insurrection and then carry on with your life with zero consequences.
Just in from CNN:
House to call on Pence and Cabinet to use 25th Amendment and move to impeach Trump
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday the House will attempt to pass a resolution by unanimous consent Monday morning calling for Vice President Mike Pence and President Donald Trump's Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office -- her first time definitively saying the House will move to impeach him.
If the resolution doesn't pass by unanimous consent, and it most assuredly won't given likely Republican resistance, then the measure will be brought to the floor for a full vote on Tuesday. The resolution will call on Pence to respond within 24 hours. "Next," Pelosi said in a letter to Democratic colleagues, "we will proceed with bringing impeachment legislation to the Floor."
A historic percentage of Americans want Trump removed from office
The majority [of Americans] (56%) say Trump should be removed from office, while just 43% believe he should not be removed.
An average across polls since Wednesday (in which no pollster is counted more than once) shows that 50% of Americans want Trump to either be impeached, for the 25th Amendment to be invoked or for Trump to resign from office. The minority (43%) say that none of these should occur.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I assume the guy is a Republican. It'd be interesting to know how many share his views.
'Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.' Voltaire
'A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.' Edward Abbey
kingdragonfly: I didn't know you could impeach a president after he left office.
Trump is screwed.
Just to be clear, impeachment happens as soon as the majority votes in favour of the articles of impeachment. The power to impeach solely vests in the House of Representatives, but the power to convict on the charges vests solely in the Senate. Think of the House of Representatives as being the prosecutor bringing the charges, and the Senate as the court that actually convicts on them. He's already been impeached once but not convicted. The difference is that this time they want to make both the impeachment and conviction stick.
The Washington Post - Schwarzenegger compares Capitol mob violence to Kristallnacht destruction by Nazis in viral video
today
Former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger decried Wednesday’s pro-Trump mob attack on the U.S. Capitol as an act of hatred that recalled Kristallnacht, the nightlong destruction of Jewish-owned businesses and institutions by the Nazis in 1938.
“Wednesday was the ‘day of broken glass’ right here in the United States,” Schwarzenegger said in a video posted to Twitter on Sunday morning that has been viewed more than 17 million times. ...
