I see this thrown around a lot but it simply isn't true.

It's possible to be an accountant or an engineer without formal training. The type of work you can do is limited by legislation before you have to be part of a professional body; i.e. a Chartered Accountant. You have to actually be a Chartered Accountant to call yourself one, but there are plenty of good accountants out there that are Accountants and considered QBE (qualified by experience).

My understanding is that engineering is the same.

Why is this change being made and so quickly after forming a new government? What issues were caused by non-degree qualified people claiming to be teachers?

I presume those with bachelors degrees in non-teaching fields e.g. Chemistry, IT etc. who undertake the 10 month DipTchg diploma would still be eligible to be called a teacher.

As @Fredd99 stated previously it's essentially just a snarky swipe at Charter Schools which the teachers union (and by extension, the Labour party) are dead against. I don't imagine there was any problem per se.

Regarding those specialsised teachers, I don't suppose that they could call themselves a 'teacher' any more, irrespective of their qualifications. Therefore a teacher who has done high-school science and a little bit of tertiary training maybe but has a teaching qualification can call themselves a chemistry 'teacher', but the person who has the degree, experience and in reality understands the subject immeasurably better cannot. Very PC which is what one expects from labour.

Coming soon - you can't call yourself a gardener unless you have a degree in horticulture; Chimney Sweeps to require a degree in Flue Maintenance and Pyrolytic Cleaning Processes; No one can call themselves Captain or Skipper - even of their own boat - unless they have full Maritime Masters Certification.

I presume it is more or less impossible to actually get a job teaching in a school sense in NZ without the correct bits of paper given the apparently significant regulation involved, so why anyone would care whether a lady down the road calls herself a 'piano teacher' - or waste parliamentary time and thus tax dollars debating it - eludes me entirely.

Lol. Though it's fascinating that Jacinda's popularity is significantly less than the party support. I thought she was doing a better job than the rest of the party combined (not saying she's doing a good job).

No surprises there...they have a long way to slide yet imo. I am sure some negative people will poke fun at Bridges...but they must realise Bridges isnt in government and the election is a long ways off.

But Labour's partners in Government, New Zealand First and the Green, are both on or above five per cent and the three parties combined would translate to 66 seats in the House, comfortably ahead of National and Act with 55 seats.

I suspect you haven't seen a charm offensive for Bridges yet. Why try to take on Labour and bring them down when they're so effective at it themselves?

Anything that takes a spotlight off Labour at the moment would be a mistake by National TBH.

You could be right, of course, but I don't think it works that way. I think Bridges is doing everything he can to get himself out there, and people just aren't responding. I'm not surprised. He has all the charm of a used car dealer with a fake smile.
