MikeB4 beat me to it. You were undercutting Jacinda Ardern even before the election and you haven't let up since. Some of your criticisms have been legitimate, and you pile them on wherever you see an opening, but some have also just been jibes. I look forward to you giving Simon Bridges (is that his name? You don't see it much in the media) equal treatment.

Leaders of the opposition will always struggle for oxygen in the media. Ask Andrew Little, David Cunliffe, David Shearer, Bill English, etc. Ardern got cut through because of media infatuation and the proximity of the election to her rise to leader of the labour party.
Interestingly, the gloss seems to be wearing off as the wrecking ball takes its downward swing towards the New Zealand economy.
All for "This generation's nuclear-free moment" and something to brag about at CHOGM.

The 'nuclear free moment for our generation' is pathetic. For many it was a non-event, or even a step backwards, likewise Jacinda's policies.

I'd strongly recommend you take up gambling. You'd become a millionaire in no time and then you could donate it all to poor people.

But to get back to the point, there's more people in NZ than just the loudmouthed 'progressives' who get all the media attention. For many (not necessarily a majority) they were apathetic or even against the anti-nuclear stance.

Fast-forward to today, the stance that Jacinda takes is not necessarily the stance that reflects all of NZ, likewise the stance of English, bridges or key.... Just saying

A familiar complaint of the right is that the left gets all the media attention, but this is just a ploy. As here on this thread, it is the right that makes the most noise and shouts down progressives until they give up and go somewhere else. As here on this thread. There are only a few of us who refuse to give up.

If you look at the larger picture, the government may be doing better than you think. Petrol is about to be priced out of existence, thanks to new taxes (of course that's what they are). Fossil fuel exploration is being curbed. Roads will not be expanded but they will be restricted in the name of safety, with new barriers and speed limits and police enforcement, making the joy of the open road a distant memory. Mass transport is getting a boost. All this and more, could be said to be part of a grand master plan to reduce sources of emission, so the government's commitment to its climate change nuclear free moment may be more real than you think. It looks pretty consistent to me. Now for those bloody cows.

In May 2012, resource consent was granted by the Waikato Regional Council to continue running the gas and coal units for a period of 25 years. This shows that the Huntly Power Station can continue to have a strategic long term role in New Zealand energy generation.[15]

IOW it wont be shut down completely, coal will still be used to generate power when required until at least 2030, and it is/will be the backup option when hydroelectric generation cannot meet demand for the foreseeable future.

We're just giving him the same chances to 'prove himself' that you have given Jacinda and the coalition government. Surely you cant object to that?

BTW I see national party supporters and the news media at NZ Herald buddies still dont understand how MMP works. National on 44%? Gee isn't that what they had on Sunday 24/09/2017... Meanwhile the coalition government is on 54%.

Although National is ahead, Labour has rarely been as close to them as it is right now.

In fact, on the poll of polls, Labour has actually closed a gap to National that had opened up after the election in September last year.

Support for Labour is seven points higher than it was on election night and the party is still more popular than it has been at any time since 2008.

Support for Labour is probably about six points higher than it was during the election campaign and towards the end of last year. While they remain some 16 points better off than they were before Jacinda Ardern took over as leader.

There may have been spike followed by a dip in support for Labour over the last month or two, or the poll that had Labour on 48 per cent may have been an outlier.

Either way, we can be reasonably confident that support for Labour is above where it was during and immediately after the election and significantly above where it was under Andrew Little's leadership.

Of course, the Government represents much more than just Labour.

There is nothing wrong with comparing National and Labour but the Government's supporters reckon the fairer comparison is between National and Labour plus NZ First plus the Green Party.

The two junior partners were up slightly in the latest Colmar Brunton poll, but our poll of polls suggests that overall their support has ebbed away slightly since the election. The Greens are on 6 per cent and NZ First 5 per cent, respectively.

But the boost in Labour's numbers is significant enough that combined support for the governing coalition is 54 per cent, up 3.5 points from the election.

No, that's the combined support figure of Labour+Greens+NZF, not the coalition government support figure. Those are two quite different things.

What is much more likely is that those who ran away could no longer defend the indefensible. Even you, a hardened leftie are struggling with the coalitions decisions and poor leadership.

You must be pretty distressed by the poll results if you have to argue the semantics of what to call the government and it's combined vote... and nothing else lol.

After 9 years of Sgt Schultz in command, this government is going in a vastly different direction with transport and housing. They will only be able to achieve so much in this term.. public transport and houses don't get built overnight after all, so you'd have to say the next election is going to be the real indication of whether the majority of NZ supports this direction or not.

Here is the difference.. Simon Bridges is not leading the country right now, he has 2 years to get his ducks lined up, work through his leadership challenges and be ready for 2020. He isn't rushing at everything like a bull at the gate, promising the earth and opposing for the sake of it.

I was in support of JA as leader of the Labour Party. Spending time in opposition proving she could lead and learning how to do her job properly. Planning and thinking through her policies and being sure BEFORE she implemented policy, that she could afford it. I felt she would be a much better PM as a result of that. I think the last 12 weeks of her failing to show leadership in any meaningful way is plenty of vindication of the concerns I voiced. If you can't see that, really you are beyond rose-tinted glasses.

*I* have not claimed that the coalition would not still lead today if an election was held. I am actually really surprised that the polls look nearly as good as they do for the 3 parties combined.
