MikeB4:

The government is not and should not be a building company. It is however an enabler and that should be it's task.

This I agree with.  In my conception an enabler clears the path ahead of talented people so they can do their job.

There is a market for cheaper hosing but various factors prevent it.  Many of these factors are regulatory - RMA and local govt.  So they should be addressing those.

But when I saw Jenny Salesa (Minster Building and Construction, Assoc. Housing and Urban Development) on The Nation at the weekend, all she could say was that the govt was investing in training of young people.  While that's laudable and will in the medium term address workforce shortages it's not going to contribute much to the kiwi-build targets.

It almost didn't matter what the question was her answer was "We are training young people". Now perhaps this is something she is very passionate about.  But she couldn't answer pretty basic and important questions about kiwi build.  I'm not sure they have a plan yet.

The gossip in Welly is that govt has diverted significant human and financial resources into trying to find land for houses and trees.  It sounds like a bit of a mad scramble.

I am not sure we should be involved with this, poking the bear is never a good tactic.

On the other hand, Churchill once said "appeasement is feeding the crocodile, hoping that it will eat you last"

I feel two World leaders that are deep in the sicky stuff have taken a century plus old notion "the Russians are coming, the Russians are coming" to build a dense smoke screen.

Fair enough - a bear and a crocodile are quite different.

We can either be against russian aggression/interference, or we can support it. In this case there is no middle-ground, if we take the moral high-ground they'll just laugh in our face, because any nation that is complicit with such atrocities as have happened in syria obviously has no morals. If we are tolerant or apatheic towards it then it is ultimately supporting it.

From childhood experience, when you bury your head in the sand you get it in your eyes. Once you've cleaned the sand out you'll probably be able to see again... then you'll might actually take note of what the russians are doing.

A century old notion can still be applicable today. Because somebody said something 100 years ago, or 100 million years ago, it can't be unsaid or changed. As progressive as you might like to be, you can't undo history, and if history is relevant to a circumstance today, then that can't be changed. If there was incidentally, a concern about Russian last century, it doesn't automatically mean that because this is a different century we can't still be concerned about the russians. To ignore Russian aggression on that basis would be extremely short-sighted and narrow-minded. I applaud Adern's stance on Russia nbow that

Picking a fight with Russia whilst insulting and alienating the USA like JA has done, doesn't seem super smart to me. In her effort to "make a name" for herself, I feel JA has done damage to the relationships with our allies. *Probably* wouldn't stop them coming to our rescue if we really needed it, but it's still not a good idea. (Though Trump could bankrupt us by sending us a bill for the resources they spent helping us out).

We need to be smart about the battles we pick and realize how insignificant and irrelevant we are to almost everyone. We have an over-inflated view of ourselves on the world stage. If Russian wiped us off the face of the earth, I doubt many countries would even notice in any significant way.

Having said that, condemning Syria for their attacks seems a no-brainer.

I was stating my point of view with out being snarky and insulting, a pity you didn't reciprocate. I shall leave to yourself.

The reality is NZ can well afford to pick a fight with anyone. Right now we would barely have a Battalion of regular combat infantry probably at best a Company.  We should stick to making our point known in the UN. We should let May and Trump play their nineteenth century games.

I think you meant ill afford. I agree.

Jacinda trying to play chicken with Australia over reciprocal rights for students and expats was silly. We have way more to lose in a fight over who can take away what the fastest.

I wrote "ill" dammit stupid spell/grammer check. grrrrrrrrrr.

Yeah we can ill afford it. A saving grace is we have no real way of getting to war with two 757's and four aging C130's and one logistics ship.

Heh, but equally, neither can we defend ourselves either. We will have farmers on rowboats with 1 oar and a shotgun defending us if it gets much worse.

Well, I guess I'll stand corrected. Maybe I need to go and take a look at a couple of more modern prefabs, but the ones we looked at 5 years ago, they were talking about a lifetime of 25-30 years. Most houses built using traditional building techniques are designed for much longer life.

Jacinda want to play with the big boys in school grounds but does not understand that her pocket has no ammo for her slingshot, in fact she does not even have a slingshot ( Our world class SAS are exempt from my references). We need to use diplomacy and in the end do what we do best, peace keeping.
