Some more former officials are going to band together to form a "Never Trump" movement, although I'll be interested to see how successful they are.

IN case you don't know all the kooky Fox News presenters, in defending Tucker Carlson against a slander case, Fox News lawyers have argued "that given Mr. Carlson's reputation, any reasonable viewer 'arrive[s] with an appropriate amount of skepticism' about the statement he makes."

That insane Tucker Carlson laugh is from this.

That's like Sidney-I-think-I'm-a-lawyer-but-not-really Powell's argument of the case she made about election fraud - ""no reasonable person would conclude that the statements [by Powell about the 2020 election] were truly statements of fact" (as per her lawyers). So she knew she was talking bs, which makes it all good? Um, okay.

BBC News - Opinion - A shift in message?

today

Last January, Joe Biden gave an inaugural address outside the US Capitol that focused on national healing and unity.

Now, standing in the centre of the building nearly a year later - after it has become clear that the nation is as divided as ever - Biden put unifying rhetoric aside and took dead aim at Donald Trump and his supporters.

In some of the sharpest words directed at his predecessor since the 2020 presidential campaign, Biden condemned Trump's continued efforts to question the legitimacy of that election.

Not only that, he blasted Republicans who continue to stand behind the former president and endorsed national efforts to enact election reform to counter what he said were Trump-backed attempts to undermine voting rights.

This is an election year in America, with control of the US Congress and several key states hanging in the balance.

Biden's rhetorical shift could represent a strategic shift, as well - a decision that the Democratic base can most effectively be rallied with anger, not hope.

DeSantis removes two Republican members of a district voting board commission

AP: TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Two county commissioners in central Florida were suspended from office Thursday, several weeks after being arrested and charged with lying during an investigation of possible Sunshine Law violations.

Both members are residents of The Villages.

The Washington Post - Capitol Police officer sues Trump on Jan. 6 anniversary, saying he ‘directed the mob’ to violence

today

A U.S. Capitol Police officer filed a lawsuit against former president Donald Trump on the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack, accusing Trump of causing emotional and physical pain, including a concussion, during last year’s riot - the latest in a litany of litigation from law enforcement against him. ...

The officer was forced to take a year off work after suffering a traumatic brain injury while fending off the pro-Trump mob that breached the Capitol, the complaint says. ...

Kirkland’s attorney told The Washington Post that Kirkland’s complaint was one of several lawsuits related to Jan. 6 filed this week on behalf of officers of the Capitol Police and D.C. police forces.

I'm reading I'll take your questions now by Stephanie Grisham. Very eye-opening on what went on behind the scenes...but a lot of books from ex-Trump staff are. God, what a screwup that was. I have no idea how any sane Republican could think the orange buffoon was doing even a remotely good job!

An older story about Trump, but I got a laugh out of it anyway:

'A brutal dinner': celebrities talk about meeting Donald Trump

Trump also played golf with many celebrities, none of whom had a good word to say about him. When Samuel L Jackson was asked if he or Trump was the better golfer, he replied: “Oh, I am, for sure. I don’t cheat.” Alice Cooper appeared to back this up during an interview when he said: “The worst celebrity golf cheat? I wish I could tell you that. It would be a shocker. I played golf with Donald Trump one time. That’s all I’m going to say.”

However, only Oscar de la Hoya is on record as detailing exactly how Trump cheats at golf. In 2016, he recounted a game to reporters. “First ball, [Trump] hits off to the water, gets another ball from his pocket. Hits it off to the left, out of bounds. Another one to the water. Then the fourth ball he hits – I know it went to the bushes. But Donald, what he does, he tees off first so he can take off right away. I pipe mine down the middle. So we go off to our ball, and who do we see? Donald Trump, right in the middle of the fairway.”

The New York Times - Opinion - Trump’s Coup, Part Deux

today

Trump’s coup attempt is in its second stage.

As NPR reported, the MAGA crowd is working hard in states like Georgia and Arizona, which defied Trump in 2020, to institutionalize Trump’s big lie, with election-deniers running for offices that control the voting process.

The Washington Post revealed that “at least 163 Republicans who have embraced Trump’s false claims are running for statewide positions that would give them authority over the administration of elections” and “at least five candidates for the U.S. House were at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riots.”

Biden must make good on his speech and make sure the Vandals who sacked the Capitol are not able to do it again. ...

This is not a moment for punch-pulling.

Washington Post: Trump’s Cable Cabinet: New texts reveal the influence of Fox hosts on previous White House

Stephanie Grisham, former press secretary to President Donald Trump, remembers the challenges that came from so many Fox News hosts having the direct number to reach Trump in the White House residence.

“There were times the president would come down the next morning and say, ‘Well, Sean thinks we should do this,’ or, ‘Judge Jeanine thinks we should do this,’” said Grisham, referring to Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro, both of whom host prime-time Fox News shows.

Grisham — who resigned from the White House amid the Jan. 6 attacks and has since written a book critical of Trump — said West Wing staffers would simply roll their eyes in frustration as they scrambled to respond to the influence of the network’s hosts, who weighed in on everything from personnel to messaging strategy.

Trump’s staff, allies and even adversaries were long accustomed to playing to an “Audience of One” — a commander in chief with a twitchy TiVo finger and obsessed with cable news.

But text messages — newly released by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection — between Fox News hosts and former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, crystallize with new specificity just how tightly Fox News and the White House were entwined during the Trump years, with many of the network’s top hosts serving as a Cable Cabinet of unofficial advisers.

As the Jan. 6 attacks on the U.S. Capitol unfolded, Meadows received texts from Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham and Brian Kilmeade, as well as Hannity, according to the newly released communications.

Funny pic!

Ironically, the anti-Trump group The Lincoln Project would air their adverts at a time on Fox, specifically when they knew Trump would see them. That really got under his skin on more than one occasion 😊

Weird. I thought it more likely that DeSantis would have removed them for not lying.

In Georgia, the state Secretary of State (strange wording, but correct) handles
  • certification of election results
  • voter registration
  • campaign finance disclosure
Trump famously asked the Georgia Secretary of State in early January to "find 11780 votes" to overturn Joe Biden's victory in the state.

The political position is usually considered as boring, and mundane, a political dead-end for those who can't get any other political position.

The current Republican Georgia congressman, U.S. Representative Jody Hice has announced she'll be running for the post.

This is the equivalent of a mayor running for the office of dog-catcher.

Regarding "1776", on July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress, severing their political connections to Great Britain.

Here's an article explaining why she's running.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Georgia U.S. Rep. Hice explains now-deleted ‘1776 moment’ post

U.S. Rep. Jody Hice has spent the past two months saying the general election was stolen from President Donald Trump and working with other House conservatives in futile attempts to reverse Joe Biden’s win.

Wednesday, Hice was among the members of Georgia’s congressional delegation who attempted during a joint session of Congress to block the state’s electoral votes from being cast for Biden. At the same time those proceedings were getting underway, Trump supporters rallied on Capitol grounds.

Hice posted a picture on Instagram that appeared to be him walking toward the House chamber ahead of the session. “This is our 1776 moment,” the caption said.

Politico: Jan. 6 panel ramps up investigation into Trump's state-level pressure

The public focus of Congress’ Jan. 6 investigation, so far, is what happened in Washington, D.C. Behind the scenes, the probe’s state-level work is kicking into overdrive.

The House committee investigating the Capitol attack has gathered thousands of records from state officials and interviewed a slate of witnesses as it attempts to retrace former President Donald Trump's attempts to subvert the 2020 election, particularly in four key states that swung the presidency to Joe Biden. They're getting ready to take their work public, possibly as soon as the spring.

The voluminous documents state election officials have sent the Jan. 6 committee ... underscore the depth of Trump's pressure campaign directed at the typically lower-level administrators of presidential balloting. The emails, texts and phone recordings also add consequential context to previously reported incidents, such as Trump’s call to Georgia's top elections investigator and Mark Meadows’ outreach to Georgia election officials.

The select panel asked states for any scrap of evidence to justify allegations of election fraud that Trump baselessly promoted, focusing much of its efforts on officials in Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Those states found virtually no evidence of fraud, according to [House committee member] Thompson.
