Most media now accept that it actually was his laptop, but it's being blown out of proportion and the chain of custody is so poor that the materials being touted as "smoking guns of corruption" by Fox and Newsmax and the like are simply impossible to verify as it's not possible to confirm they are not tampered with or forged.

(Ooops, didn't see that this post was from ages ago! Always confusing when a thread gets ressurected).

It's in the news again so still relevant. Sorry to say you have been misled. Your statement is incorrect. The same factually incorrect statement has been made in Fox News reporting.

The first problem is that no-one except Giuliani and Giuliani's repairman friend have seen the actual laptop. Respected media outlets have verified some of the content such as email was in fact genuine email to/from the named recipients - that is all. It's a long way from verifying the actual laptop and the claimed contents of the laptop as original.

The reason the alleged Hunter Biden laptop is in the news again is Zuckerberg's recent interview given to Rogan: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62688532

In contrast to the article above this interview is being reported by some outlets something like Zuckerberg says FBI told me to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Once again, incorrect. The FBI warned Facebook in that time period about disinformation. Facebook decided independently that the Hunter Biden laptop story could not be verified at the time - and for that reason avoided the automatic sharing and spamming they usually do. Also note Facebook did not prevent direct sharing and posting etc just the automated stuff.

It's much, much worse than that. The whole story is so farcical that no-one but the most hardcore Retrumplican, or a Fox news viewer, would believe it. Some of the highlights (with memory E&OE):

* The backstory is that it was handed to a computer repair guy who, when asked to describe who had handed it to him, said he had no idea because he was legally blind.

* When the story ran in the New York Post, already not the most reputable publication, they wanted to add extra names to the byline to make it seem more authoritative. The NY Post reporters fought to not be included, in the end the supposed co-author was some woman who wasn't aware her name had been used until she read the story after it was published.

* The audit logs on the machine had been repeatedly overwritten.

* There were documents on there that post-dated the time the laptop was supposedly handed in.

And on and on and on. The only thing we can be fairly certain of is that it's not Russian kompromat because they'd never be that amateurish, most likely it's some Retrumplican's homebrew attempt at kompromat.
