If I was a betting man, I'd say Luxon will just blame that all on Labour. If so, I'd love to hear what his plan is to fix it, given he used to run an airline.

He criticised National policy earlier in the year but kept his job. I guess now they're in power he can see which way the wind is blowing and knows he's going to have a lot more to say about them going forward. May as well resign now so it doesn't have to be a scandal later.

I can respect not wanting to try and clean up what is going to happen for the next 3 years and leaving before the storm.

They're supposed to do it in private and then go do what they're told if the minister doesn't listen. Really, same as any other employee. Feel free to tell your boss they're about to make a mistake, and then just get it in writing when they tell you to do it anyway. But don't go posting about it on LinkedIn unless you've already got your petrol can and matches ready to burn the bridges as you go.

Yeah me too, except that most schools already had that policy before Chris Luxon decided it was a good idea. Our son managed to get his phone confiscated once or twice a term.

Is it a good idea? Yes. Is it more to appease the boomers than because it is actually helpful? Also yes.

Sure, but as a member of the public and a local idiot, I would like to know when a minister/goverment is doing a shit job.
Help with me hopefully being informed when voting.

Plus if an employee tells me not to get the food at the place they are working at.

I am going to listen and not eat the food... and be thankful they didn't keep it internal.

Indeed. I honestly don't know which alternative is best (or least worst?). By definition the minister's decisions are based on their politics. But how do you really know about the public servant that criticises them?

I mean, when it is in the open, it is way easier to shine the light on something.
We keep too many things in the dark or look the otherway and pretend they do not see the broken/rotten.

Everyone has a biases, doesn't mean what they have to say isn't worth hearing because it is deemed as not "proper" or it is not the "code of conduct".

The neutrality of the public service is how we ensure we can keep a functional civil sector from one government to the next.

The alternative is that we have to clear out key posts with each change in government, which becomes hugely disruptive - and leads to political appointments becoming the norm in all areas of life.

If a few extremely well-paid ex-politicos decide they can't handle being 'muzzled' then I'm sure there are plenty of capable people out there who would love the chance to what they do for the money they get for doing it.

Is it a good idea? Yes. Is it more to appease the boomers than because it is actually helpful? Also yes.

Kids these days see phones as more important than their arm. It is a distraction at breaks and at lunch. And when they sneakily have them. Like I woulda done back in the day. But the schools shouldn't waste time managing kids toys, so better they stay at home

If a biased public servant told you they are doing a shit job, they are biased. Everyone has a bias of some sort and to some degree. If a servant gets in strife for comments that reach the media, then what are they saying/doing on a daily basis that doesn't reach the media? You just need to do the job as a public servant and leave the bias at home, it cannot be that hard
