Aljazeera: Moscow concert hall attack: Why is ISIL targeting Russia?

More than 133 people have been killed and more than 100 others were injured following a brazen attack on concertgoers at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall before a performance by a Soviet-era rock band on Friday.

Assailants dressed in camouflage uniforms opened fire and reportedly threw explosive devices inside the concert venue, which was left in flames with its roof collapsing after the deadly attack.

ISIL’s Afghan branch – also known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) – has claimed responsibility for the attack and United States officials have confirmed the authenticity of that claim, according to the Reuters news agency.
...
Murat Aslan, a military analyst and former Turkish army colonel, said ISIL’s Afghanistan affiliate is known for its “radical and tough methodologies”.

“I think their ideology inspires them in terms of selecting targets. First of all, Russia is in Syria and fighting against Daesh [ISIL] like the United States. That means they see such countries as hostile,” Aslan told Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin's attempts to blame the Crocus City Hall attacks on Ukraine are as deeply cynical as ever. Just as it attempted to claim Ukraine was shipping weapons to Hamas. And of course, Lavrov's goalpost-shifting on "de-Nazifying" Ukraine when it was pointed out Zelensky actually is Jewish.

Not 100% confirmed but seems likely true

Simple Flying: Russian Su-27 Hit By Friendly Fire Plunges Into The Black Sea In Flames

Friendly fire is a rising danger for Russian pilots in Ukraine's skies.

Ukrainian Su-27s with anti-radiation missiles pose a threat to Russian air defenses.

Russian air defenses are on edge, leading to friendly fire incidents (aka fratricide) and civilians shot down.

I saw a similar story today - Russia air defense shot down a Kinsal (i.e. Russian) missile hundreds of kms inside Russian territory.

I presume it would have been heading Westwards but private conscriptovich chose to shoot it down anyway.

Today's joke coming from Russia: "Russia has demanded that Ukraine extradite a number of people, including the head of the country’s SBU security service, over claims they are connected with “terrorist” acts."

Oh, go away, will you?

Yep, the Kremlin's firehose of falsehood never ceases to draw long bows. Just the latest in a long line of them.

The Murdoch-owned tabloid said, celebrating the fact that Greene and other “Republican renegades” failed to stop passage of the Ukraine aid on Saturday, though they long delayed it.

The New York post originally had this quote "The score in Congress is now ‘Jewish space lasers lady 0, common sense 1" but has since removed it.

NY Post: ‘Moscow Marjorie’ Taylor Greene, GOP rebels defeated as House passes $61B in Ukraine aid package

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Saturday crushed a putsch by far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Republican rebels — pushing through a $95.3 billion aid package that funds the fight against Russia, the defense of Israel and resistance against China.

Lawmakers in a rare bipartisan effort overwhelmingly approved the four-bill package, including one measure providing $60.8 billion for Ukraine.

About 80% of that money will go toward replenishing supplies of US-made weapons and ammunition and other direct military assistance.

Another $9.5 billion is in the form of a forgivable loan.

The bill passed 311-112 with all “nay” votes coming from Republicans, including Greene who was hailed as “Moscow Marjorie” by members of both major political parties.

As the joke goes, that's a good start.

It's a shame Ukraine's allies didn't provide enough ammunition to allow every target to be shot at in order to get that number even higher but hopefully that will be rectified shortly.

I'm impressed by the shoot down of the russian bomber so far behind enemy lines https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/what-is-russian-bomber-plane-that-ukraine-says-it-shot-down-2024-04-19/

Ukraine show a great resilience and inventiveness. I wonder if this shootdown will make russia pull the bombers back even further , complicating missions?

No, but you have, and you're giving it away. Good on you.

I don't believe that we are ‘giving away’ anything against our will. I think there are contracts in place.
