Was just reading an article on the latest Australian supreme court appointment which, indirectly, points out just how broken the US is. Some excerpts:

Jayne Jagot appointed to Australia’s high court, creating first majority-female bench.

[...]

On 17 October, Jagot will replace justice Patrick Keane, who was appointed in March 2013 but is approaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

[...]

Dreyfus consulted all state and territory attorneys general and their shadows, the heads of the federal courts and state and territory supreme courts, state and territory bar associations and law societies, National Legal Aid, Australian Women Lawyers, the National Association of Community Legal Centres and deans of law schools.

[...]

Although Jagot is highly respected and was also considered for a high court appointment by the former attorney general Christian Porter, legal experts believe the latest in a slew of appointments from the federal court has left the high court lacking in judges with a background in criminal law.

That's pointing out everything that's wrong with the US supreme court in one article: No eternal tenures, consultation with everyone including the opposition, and the only complaint anyone can make about her is that she may not have enough criminal law experience.

The Guardian - Trump not required to provide sworn declaration that FBI ‘planted’ evidence

breaking

A federal judge ruled on Thursday that Donald Trump would not have to provide a sworn declaration that the FBI supposedly “planted” some of the highly-sensitive documents seized from his Mar-a-Lago resort, as he has suggested, until his lawyers have reviewed the seized materials.

The order from US district court judge Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing the special master case and is a Trump appointee, also pushed back several key interim deadlines that consequently extends the review’s final date of completion from the end of November to mid-December.

Cannon’s ruling means Trump does not have to confirm under oath his insinuations that the FBI manufactured evidence – one of several assertions he has made in recent weeks, without evidence, that could be used against him should he be charged over illegal retention of government documents.

Donny must be very pleased with his pet judge.  😁

I hope that gets appealed, she's already been told off for her last ruling which was deemed failing in some areas.

Honestly the first amendments rights are extremely strong.

Note this article from Britannica is a bit dated, because "fighting words" are almost a impossibility, as almost judge will ignore this defense.

Unlike the UK, defamation in the US is almost impossible to prove also. Ask the countless conservative snowflakes and large corporations who have brought SLAPP lawsuits.

Luckily for those who hate Trump, incitement is prosecutable.

"Despite the broad freedom of expression guaranteed by the First Amendment, there are some historically rooted exceptions. First, the government may generally restrict the time, place, or manner of speech, if the restrictions are unrelated to what the speech says and leave people with enough alternative ways of expressing their views. Thus, for instance, the government may restrict the use of loudspeakers in residential areas at night, limit all demonstrations that block traffic, or ban all picketing of people’s homes.

Second, a few narrow categories of speech are not protected from government restrictions. The main such categories are
  • incitement,
  • defamation,
  • fraud,
  • obscenity,
  • child pornography,
  • fighting words, and
  • threats
. As the Supreme Court held in Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), the government may forbid “incitement”—speech “directed at inciting or producing imminent lawless action” and “likely to incite or produce such action” (such as a speech to a mob urging it to attack a nearby building)."

The NY Times - Ginni Thomas Denies Discussing Election Subversion Efforts With Her Husband

29 September

WASHINGTON i Virginia Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas and a conservative activist who pushed to overturn the 2020 election, told the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol that she never discussed those efforts with her husband, during a closed-door interview [on 29 September] in which she continued to perpetuate the false claim that the election was stolen. ...

Ms. Thomas called it “an ironclad rule” that she and Justice Thomas never speak about cases pending before the Supreme Court.

It is laughable for anyone who knows my husband to think I could influence his jurisprudence - the man is independent and stubborn, with strong character traits of independence and integrity,” she added. ...

Yeah, right.  😏

"Laughable", yes, she definitely is. At least she got that definition right.

The Washington Post - Trump’s paid-speeches organizer is struggling financially

29 September

A company that organized a lucrative series of post-White House paid speeches for former president Donald Trump is now struggling to pay vendors, investors and employees, angering Trump allies who supported the effort.

The American Freedom Tour, which struck a multimillion-dollar deal with Trump after he left office, has lost two top executives and canceled events in a number of locations as it has failed to pay its bills ...

Its founder and owner, who has a history of bankruptcy filings, recently sought bankruptcy protection again.

It’s not clear what that means for the tour’s advertised upcoming black-tie gala at Mar-a-Lago, with tickets starting at $10,000 a couple to spend time with Trump.

The event includes a poolside reception and a formal ballroom dinner.

Dinner and a photo with Trump costs $40,000, and a private library meeting with Trump is so pricey that it’s only listed as: “INQUIRE BELOW.”

The company declined to say how much Trump is being paid for the event.

$10k just to..."spend time" with him??? Jesus, you couldn't pay me enough to get away from him! Yuck.

And $40k for dinner?? LOL! I presume the actual cost of dinner probably isn't included in that hefty amount either.

There is some truth to the old saying, I guess - "a fool and his money are soon parted".

No, it's included, there's a pile of hamberders and many, many french fries by the door where you can help yourself as you come in.

Actually, I knew I'd seen this somewhere. He did this previously when he shut down the government: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/jan/29/donald-trump-mcdonalds-clemson-white-house-visit-black-players

Here's a Florida moment, that makes me think they deserve Trump and Governor Desantis.

Florida man holding "F__k Joe Biden" flag outside during Hurricane Ian, because of course Trump and Desantis did everything humanly possible to respect nature, ensuring proper infrastructure, pre-planning and funding emergency responses, and not allowing developers to build in irresponsible places for a quick buck.

I'd leave a guy like that to fend for himself. I'm sure Trump would fall over himself to help him out... (/sarcasm)

Also - re declassifying documents simply by "thinking about it":
