I support the Government stepping in to arrange this payment, though why this would be more deserving than any one of 100 cases that occur every week seemingly will perturb some. 

What I wouldn't necessarily support, is a change in legislation to capture the very small number of extreme fringe cases. Not just as it affects this one person, but as a concept in general. 

rjt123: Certainly tragic. But is there no other benefits or government assistance for a scenario like that? Surely the household is entitled to more that just paid parental leave...?

Why?

To determine that you would need a lot more information about the total picture, and it's unlikely (fairly enough) that it would become public knowledge.

As someone whos' wife nearly died in childbirth, I fully sympathize with this person. We were fortunate that my wife was in a hospital. Had she of had a home birth (something I would *never* recommend) I would certainly be a single dad now and my daughter would never have been born. 

No matter what system you set up, there will always be tragedy and extreme cases that get through the cracks. Ultimately, it's about making sure that it's known that fringe cases have fix, by way of one off payments or a special entitlement and making sure that knowledge is held by enough key people in situations like this. 

I would be interested to know why Jacinda has decided that donating $5.5m to the Clinton Foundation over the next year is more important than delivering on their election promise to reduce Doctor's visits by $10 from July 1st.

We had an interesting situation where scrap paper on a school project recently contained some salary information of the teachers at the school. I was actually very surprised how much teachers got paid at various levels. It's a lot higher than I expected. Esp considering how many weeks leave there is a year in a teaching job. 

Before people jump down my throat in a frantic panic that I dare say something even remotely negative about teachers, I do not dispute teachers are hard workers.

I'd like to say that defies belief, but I think more accurately I'd have to say it defies logic. 

So spent some time with property developers last night, got into a discussion about Kiwi build. Understandably they are FOR it, but there is a big problem with Kiwibuild in that Labour wants them to reach a price point that would only be achievable (In Auckland and Hamilton)  if the Government sells the land to developers at $500 a m2 which means that the Government would be basically giving away the land at huge losses over what it acquired it for. 

I did find it more than a little ironic that they were extolling the 18 houses "built" under the Kiwibuild program, but then admitted they weren't "built" they were "bought" and rebranded. When I pointed this out, their comment was "don't get too caught up in the details". 

I thought this really should have been Labours slogan all along. 

To wit, there have been NO houses BUILT by Labour to date. I am not sure what they paid for them, but my it was intimated to me they paid over the target price point for them, meaning the Government is subsidizing them.

They may be doing good work but a big part of the purpose is to big up the Clinton family influence. It was a dumb move from the previous govt and it is a dumb move from this one. Nothing particular against the Clintons from me I'd feel the same if it was Obama foundation Trump foundation etc.

I wasn't aware National had done it, and had I of known, I would have thought it a bad move. 

I'd have more issue with the association of the Clinton foundation than the Obama one. I liked President Clinton, I thought he was a pretty decent president, but his charity has been mired in scandals for years. It's not a good look.
