GV27:

The neutrality of the public service is how we ensure we can keep a functional civil sector from one government to the next.

The alternative is that we have to clear out key posts with each change in government, which becomes hugely disruptive - and leads to political appointments becoming the norm in all areas of life.

If a few extremely well-paid ex-politicos decide they can't handle being 'muzzled' then I'm sure there are plenty of capable people out there who would love the chance to what they do for the money they get for doing it.

100%. It will always happen, so keep the ripe apples, not the bad

Kids these days see phones as more important than their arm. It is a distraction at breaks and at lunch. And when they sneakily have them. Like I woulda done back in the day.  But the schools shouldn't waste time managing kids toys, so better they stay at home

Oh yes, I'm not saying it's a bad policy because no-phones is a bad idea. I'm saying it's a merely performative policy because most if not all schools would be enforcing no-phones without it anyway. As, for example, both our kids schools already do.

How do they enforce it? I read somewhere when this was raised in the campaign, that the kids hand them in then the school hands them back?  I initially saw this as yet another silly policy, "here is a policy that we already do" but if the school and teachers are spending time admin-ing phones,. that's not right IMO

No phones in schools too

Schools could do this previously....

It frees up pressure on teachers having to debate with "those" parents who do not like the school rules and always try to get exemptions because their child is so special. Now they can say, It is the government rules the we have no choice, go complain to your local MP.

So the answer is to create regulation(s) by central goverment and take away choice/decision from the communities.... hmm sounds like that commie 3 waters stuff to me.

As Cruxis posted. Teachers should be teaching. The commie rules will let them get back to their job.

There have been too many cases of schools having to back down on policies because parents got either a) lawyers involved, b) got the media involved or c) both, all over things like haircuts, facial hair, breaking school rules resulting in a ban from a rowing trip (could be a different sport, can't remember) and most recently, girls having to prove they weren't rolling up skirts to flout uniform rules about skirt length.

Its no longer a case of "their sandpit, their rules", the current woke generation seem to be wanting to do what they want, when they want, how they want and the rules be damned. I'd probably agree that stretching / flouting the rules is no different than any other generation of students in times gone past, but the reach of both social and main stream media is now such that these types of issues attract significant scrutiny and in the current politically correct climate, feelings matter more than pretty much anything else.

Hmm, I think I understand, those dirty commie laws and regulations are all well and good when they are focused on those "woke" Youths.

Their feelings don't matter, they are a burden to me the tax payer. Got to get them that hour of reading and math each day so they can be good and proper workers for me when I want my National s

Superannuation.

However those government folk even think about making laws or regulations that apply to me. Gosh darn it, I will be in my Ford ranger ute going around the town square tooting up a storm.

Silly me, the kids, and parents and heaven above all those laywer are the snow flakes here, feelings pfftt feelings have no place in government policy....

Side note: I don't have kids, so no dog in this fight but gosh darn funny as when a National,Act, NZ first govt want to put regulations in to change society and peoples behaviour.

Not really. Kids behaviour with phones at school is a problem so the teachers waste time managing that. Not really changing society, just removong a modern part of society that has no place at school

Yes no place in school, just like personal phones have no place in the work place..

stares at the screen

You! whoever you are, how many times have you used your phone or PC today during working hours and looked at Reddit or GZ or Stuff!
Yes? I am waiting?
Not good enough sir/ma'am
Don't you know you are there to work!
Think of your poor employer or manager, they have to spend all that time trying to get you back focusing on the job you are supposed to be doing.
Break times only you say, nah, never a personal phone shouldn't be on site, you can't be distracted you know got to be a good worker and no distracting your co-workers with chat.

Oi you over there at the back being the class clown, just because it is casual friday doesn't mean you get to goof off.
You are stealing time from our employer here. You are here to make money.
Don't make me call Mr Luxon and get another law added to that 100 day plan of his!

Also don't think you can go runnning to mum, I mean Seymour, the Minister for Regulations, he is here to remove all those woke laws.
What is woke? Listen I don't get paid to think, woke is anything they say is woke.

It's a bit like the photos I see of road workers standing around. I feel bad for them as they're out in public. I used to work in a big office. I'd love to see some covert photo of a hundred employees with two hundred screens, see how many are having a coffee, how many screens are on the screen saver etc. Put it up on Facebook and wait for the comments, slackers, time wasters etc.

I mean of my forty hour work week, nearly half of it is in a car or plane. There would be some terrible photos of me!
