Well, there is the 1B they already invoiced NZ for their retirement err I meant regional fund.

Though it's ok, NZ seems much happier with 500M being slashed from the 1B they promised for healthcare.

One action courtesy of Winston Peters has changed my view on the coalition. The manifesto was sold in order to gain the treasury benches and no conscience seem to be present. I had been prepared to give them time to fulfil but they clearly have no desire to do so and all their talk has just been BS.

Over four years, yes. Those relationships are very important to new zealand.

In addition to that missing info it is a silly headline. It's just a big number. The increase in foreign aid etc in percentage terms compared to the previous govt would be more useful for comparison.

It's still $900M. A lot of it is going to Pacific aid, an area apparently under National. This on top of the however many million they gave during their tour of the islands maybe 6 weeks ago with Winston Peters saying he expects there to be more coming.

I'd like to understand what we get from this ? We have major problems in NZ according to Labour in their election beat up of National. Since they have taken office, they have systemically reduced their promises on things directly for NZ, but I did NOT see any mention of this 900M going overseas.

To be honest this has made me angry, again something that you sure get me for. The report card has been reviewed and they get a fail.

And so much for Winston's bottom lines. Despite have an almost infinite line of 'bottom lines' he's managed to secure an useless, irrelevant and awfully expensive concession.

To put it in perspective, his beloved rail link from whangarei-Auckland was estimated at $500 million, and would have significant benefit for NZ. It was one of his better policies IMO.

Last night the Australians have increased their foreign aid budget to A$3.9 billion - and that's per year, with 90% region targeted.

That doesn't even hit the news over there - it's normal and not dragged into partisan politics.

Is there some problem with NZ increasing aid in our backyard, when as I understand it the aid is only being increased back to the level it was a few years ago, or is this just a "but - Winston" thing.

NZ would be idiots to ignore geopolitics in the region, and China's push.  Clinton is right.

It's the promising the earth for local policy during the election, scaling it back post-election and then showing no such restraint when it comes to the coalition party policies that is getting people annoyed, not the fact that we're paying aid. If there's not enough money in the pot then there isn't enough money in the pot.

This is the same misdirection Golriz tried in her defence; no one was questioning whether criminals deserved defence counsel but that every criticism of her was painted that way to avoid talking about how they had intentionally worded their PR to avoid mentioning it.

How much bigger is Australias economy than NZ? Did the current Australian Government do this after campaigning to deliver x for it's own people after making a big deal how the previous Government had neglected everyone and then has so far reduced x by 50%?

Did Aussie Health care get it's promised budget cut by 500M recently?

If you can't see why people are upset, well I don't know what to tell you. For the record, it's not just the people in this forum btw, I was out last night and not one positive thing was said about it by anyone. I know this won't mean anything to do you, because anyone who is upset "is just being partisan or doesn't understand the situation like you do".

I agree with that. But wouldn't it be better to fix the fictitious sewage pouring down the  walls of the nations hospitals first? I see no benefit in having 'pacific influence' if NZ is rapidly descending into a third world state. pacific influence doesn't fix homelessness or poverty or road or carbon emissions.

OR... is this foreign aid increase actually saying that all of the nation's woes that Labour have been crying "wolf, wolf" about are actually just a farce to cover up their election lies and overpromises?

I trust Clinton no more than I trust Trump and I most certainly do not trust Trump in the slightest. The US is the biggest threat to regional stability.

So that's approximately AU .3% v NZ .6% of GDP. That's quite a large difference in spending, which I would hope has a strong justification backing the decision up.
