What really gets me is out of ALL the things Labour promised during the election campaign what have they done?

The Pacific seem to be treated better than NZ's less fortunate folks. Health seems to be a huge loser in all this and yet Shane Jones and the Pacific have most of our cash..and the students!!!.

We do have responsibility for a large chunk of the South Pacific

We just completed a tour of thePacificc islands where substantial funds were given.

I understand emergency aid, I don't have an issue with this.

What I do have an issue with, is being completely responsible for the ability of another sovereign nation, or in this case, multiple, to be able to exist. It appears they cannot exist without us and Australia, at all.

Is this reasonable?

Yes because nz cannot exist without the pacific islands and nz has probably the largest polynesian population in the world. Strong relationships make sense.

It is assist them in their own country or assist them in ours, the alternative is a regional catastrophe.

Self imposed presumably - I can see no logic for it.

Still can't see any logic.

Cut them adrift and let them sink or swim on their own two feet. If people want to live in places like that, I see no reason for us to subsidise that. You might as well expect the UK to donate to NZ since the relationship and economics probably have a similar ratio.

Thankfully we have more compassion as a nation or we would have cut adrift a small Island off France at least twice in the twentieth century

The example of the Cooks, they were part of NZ and its peoples NZ citizenship. Another example the Tokelau Group falls under our sovereignty. Samoa was a NZ territory during the early 20th century. We actually attributed to a major loss of life on the Islands.

These are all very vague responses. I am not quite in the Geektastic camp of cut them off at the knees, however, I still don't understand why we should be required to prop up their economy? I will need to look up the numbers later, but we just gave the islands visited a couple of months ago, the equivalent of every man woman AND child 11K in donations. I understand it's not going to them personally, but it's the same concept.

I support aid, as I do social services but I support it as a temporary solution to help them get back on their feet to standalone and contribute.

Just because a lot of Islanders have come here to live doesn't mean we owe their country anything specifically? Otherwise we would be making payments to China, India etc.

I understand also, I am breaking it down in to more simple terms than it is, however the concepts aren't completely apart.

There seems to be some fear if I am reading between the lines of some of the press stuff, that we are scared that China will "buy" these islands by providing their own aid, and this is seen as a threat to NZ.

For those of you who think I never have anything good to say about Labour.

This is at the very least moving pretty quickly. I disagree about the path they are going to take and as a result of the speed these things will move (I'd prefer it to head offroad and be moving faster).
