gzt: Yes because nz cannot exist without the pacific islands
I don't know that that is exactly true? Could you enlarge on that?
Aid has it's place, but how much is too much?
gzt: Yes because nz cannot exist without the pacific islands and nz has probably the largest polynesian population in the world. Strong relationships make sense.
Just because Polynesians have left their original homes and migrated to NZ in large numbers, I fail to see why this would cause us to cease to exist without it? I am not saying they shouldn't be here, or that they aren't contributing, simply trying to understand the logic that we can't exist without them? They fall well behind other nationalities in NZ as a percentage of total population.
If Polynesia fails to exist we will fail to exist, we are Polynesian
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

By that reasoning, on a per-capita basis, NZ will be getting a significant portion of the foreign aid budget?
If polynesia as a whole ceased to exist, for sure, that would eliminate us. But that's not exactly what was being implied previously...
Stopping aid to these countries would not stop Polynesia from existing (Though it would stop those countries from existing potentially, this is the issue, they should be supported whilst they work out how to exist without complete external support) , therefore I am not sure the issue?
Meaning like it or not we are as much Polynesian as any other part of Polynesia that is what I am eluding to and GZT is eluding to. We are in the Polynesian triangle from Rapanui to Hawaii to South of NZ.

I hold much greater affinity to Polynesia and Melanesia than most other regions including my forebears home of Denmark. I believe we have an absolute responsibility to assist our kin in the rest of Polynesia and here in Aotearoa.

I am not sure the point you are trying to make. I don't think it answers the questions I raised.
If these countries cease to exist, because they can't economically cease to exist, what happens, worst case? I am not asking if the race discontinues, but if the countries themselves do?
What is being done to help them be able to exist more independently? ( I don't imagine you could answer than specifically yourself, it's more a theoretical question).

I agree, but t say we couldn't exist without them is an overstatement. Just like if a family member dies, it's tragic, but it doesn't mean you will necessarily follow suit. The question being, because we actually give them a significant amount already, do they NEED more?
(Emphasis on 'need')
NZ doesn't really need the Pacific Islands. Some of them do need us.
All that really matters in all of this aid business is reducing China's influence.
Mike
This will be answered soon enough due to climate change. With rising sea levels New Zealand will need to take a great many refugees from the Islands and many will cease to exist. We will also need to give considerable aid to those that do continue due to the loss of their arable lands, cities, ports and Airports.
Going back a few years the mass migration during the 70's from the other islands caused considerable financial and other related problems for the Islands as their population was stripped of its young. It is better for them to remain in their homes than to leave. It is better for NZ to provide aid and assist them grow their economies. We have not done well by our kin in the islands over time so now is teh time for us to step up. New Zealand either by dubious decisions or plain incompetence resulted in around one fifth of the population of Samoa to die.
We governed these place for a long time we have a responsibility.

Jacinda has an opportunity to significantly reduce the gender pay gap by paying nurses and teachers substantially more. Who knows she may even attract more males into those professions which would be good. There are total of about 130000 people, about 75% of whom are female across those fields (sources: Min of Ed Education Statistics 2016; Min of Health Health Workforce Report 2015)
Will she? I'm predicting not. Virtue signalling is one thing, actually doing something other than talk costs money.

As a result of climate change, it seems to be that potentially they will all end up living here or Australia or elsewhere pretty much anyways. It's a lot less expensive to support 1 infrastructure than 5.
Over time I'd expect our day to day responsibility to the Islands should be reducing, not increasing, and I agree with @aquamike that it feels more like strategic Chinese investment blocking, than a desire to truly assist the Islands in a meaningful way.
As to whether that is a valid reason, I am unsure, it may be. I'd rather it was pitched that way than under the guise of assistance.
Is it my view that China will eventually invade or simply strangle NZ into becoming a province of China. They are being quite strategic in their buying of NZ land, companies and other resources.
Fantastic results re: the partnership with the Superfund on LRT for the Inner and West regions of Auckland. If Labour acheive/deliver nothing else, this alone will be transformative for Auckland. Again, I want to see the Nats criticising this explain how they would solve the problems with gridlock on SH16 that are basically there from 4 - 7pm each and every day.

Do you really think this will resolve that? I am in favour of the link to the airport, but I see it making traffic down dominion road, mt eden road, and Sandringham road magnitudes worse.
