IMHO thats like sending some people to the slaughter. It may be a power play, but thats what it is

Watching media lately, chiefly CNN, also Fox and BBC. USA is not a reliable trade partner or defense partner. While that may not instigate massive changes tomorrow, it will start a solid trend next week, next 6 months and years to come. EU and many other global regions will look after friends. US is becoming isolationist, so the rest of us will do what we do.

To quote Jeff Sachs, from his recent address to the European Parliament, "To be an enemy of the United States is dangerous. To be their friend is fatal"

But you can choose your friends, not your enemies. 😁

Putin has shunned the ceasefire. Expected, as that doesn't work with USSR 2.0 or his reputation as a winner by Russian citizens. many factors are non negotiable, which means Russia gets what it wants and UKR loses. So no ceasefire. But a partial ceasefire that no one targets energy infrastructure

"Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered his military to adhere to a 30-day ceasefire on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, but he did not extend the temporary truce to the active frontlines or civilian populations. "

As expected someone went against that and they blame each other. Not hard to guess who.

This war will not end as we all hope it will do. As Keir Starmer said recently, EU/UK needs feet on the ground and planes in the air.

IMO there will be no negotiation that ends with compliance.

Goldfish are surely smarter given how long they have avoided extinction.

Anyway can't see Trump supplying another cent beyond the Biden aid that he sees as a loss given his efforts to get GOP to block.
Even pulling out the base in Poland that facilitates not just US supply but transshipping from countries that can't ship directly.
Might be also be slowing stuff from Australia without spares and heavy shipping capability that US military has.

Ukraine can thank Trump a million times, but that aid was from Biden and Congress disobeying Trumps orders so thanks don't land.
Not just Trump, but Vance and most of the cabinet, Evangelicals don't even care about Palm Sunday.

Not keeping up as much as I should be. Ive seen that US want a peace deal, pretty much now. Rubio says days, Trump says soon IIRC. The deal is if one party doesnt cooperate the US will "pass" Which means they can use that "clause" to opt out. Lets say that Putin wanted this and this and this and that. All untenable. Lets say UKR said no to one of those untenable options, the US, aka Trump/Rubio will say that UKR isnt cooperating, so the US is out. Rubio IIRC stated that Russia can have Crimea which they annexed illegally in 2014. UKR will decline that. USA is by definition stating that if you illegally attack a country, then later, illegally attack that same country, you will be rewarded with territory.

I also saw somewhere that US will sign the UKR minerals deal in a week. Unsure if thats correct. No issue with that as US has contributed a LOT of money. But EU has in fact contributed more money, not a lot more but more. But less intel/materials. Both should be part of a minerals deal as UKR rewards its supporters. However, the war isnt over. When it is over, the level that EU and USA share a minerals deal will change. Needless to say, that will favour the EU.

I hope EU takes it on fully, thats what I see will happen. Not easy, but good must take down evil. Should that occur, EU will be seen as great. USA will be seen as selfish. They are ok with exiting UKR, not surprising given they cut jobs left right and centre, USAID being the most harsh, arguably. Tack onto that when other countries population and Govts, promote less imports and exports with the US where they can, in favour of friendly trading nations, the US will be on a steady downwards spiral. Their main economic adversary, will prosper. We know who that is

The conditions for a permanent ceasefire in the war, as supported by the US and presumably Putin are laughable. Trump might complain that Zelensky is being difficult in negotiations, but there is not a Ukrainian yet born who would agree to terms including the surrender of all land currently occupied by Russia, the recognition of annexed Crimea as Russian territory, no guarantee of Ukrainian security, no membership of NATO for Ukraine. Oh, and Ukraine can still sign over a stack of minerals to the US as a "thank-you" for all the "help".

The United States and the rest of the western world unfortunately reached a fork in the road when Trump was returned to office and we are now well past that. I agree with the view that western allies need to continue to push ahead at speed with security help for Ukraine and wider Europe, irrespective of what Donald "I Just Signed An Executive Order" Trump would like to happen. Pulling a black pen out of a cigar box, drawing a zig-zag line, and claiming it's a signature appears to be his only discernable skill.

Had the western world adequately supplied and supported Ukraine at the outset of this conflict, you might reasonably expect the war to have been concluded with less loss of life and certainly less loss of territory than we have now seen. As it is Ukraine have held their own with hand-me-down weapons and drip-fed conditional support against a far larger adversary. The nuclear capability aside, Russia have been given a substantial kicking in this conflict and are surely just as stretched to their limit as Ukraine is. There is only one way to deal with bullies and that is to stand up to them. It's long since time that Putin and Trump were taught this lesson by Europe and willing partners in the wider world.

Sadly, his latest war he will solve, the Tariff War, has meant Ukraine is down the list. He hasn't solved it, so he is more focussed on other wars he cannot solve, hence backing down to China on the tariffs.

While the EU doesnt have the fire power of the US, the US hasn't used any fire power, they just provide arms and some training. Starmer said some short months ago that the EU needs feet on the ground and planes in the air. That will do it. Russia is stretched to the limit. Many of the people must be over it, and suffering from it. Wonder how politics is going???  Like Hitler, there will be government/military people who are tired of it. Perhaps they will crack, and Putin will fall down the hole. If so, the "new" leadership will pander to the West, and pay, but they would succeed. Assuming such a leadership works for the people. Ironic that as a communist state SHOULD be working for the people. Like Hitler, not in this case

I will just be watching to see Ukraine pull a Trump and cancel the treaty unilaterally when it suits them.
