With Republican friends like these, who needs Republican enemies?

Politico: Anti-abortion leaders worry they may have to oppose Trump if he doesn’t back national ban

Top anti-abortion leaders are continuing to lobby Donald Trump on a 15-week ban they believe should be the standard for the Republican Party.

Their efforts come even as Trump has not only refused to embrace a ban but has framed some abortion legislation as electorally toxic. And it is being driven by a desire to avoid the politically uncomfortable spectacle of having to rebuke the man who not only delivered their movement its greatest win, but is likely to be the GOP’s presidential nominee.

“We will oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to embrace at a minimum a 15-week national standard to stop painful late-term abortions while allowing states to enact further protections,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, has said of the organization’s 2024 strategy.

Another interesting one from Politico, looking at Trump's relationship to the Republican party: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2023/05/18/donald-trump-paradox-gop-00097458

kingdragonfly: stop painful late-term abortions

Will they also stop pink elephants and unicorns?

"Late-term abortions" was an invention by the US anti-abortion movement, there's no such thing despite claims that "you can have an abortion right until the day before you give birth". Since they're imaginary, the anti-abortion crusaders can invent anything they want around them, and more importantly by shouting "late-term abortions" over and over again it makes it impossible to have any reasonable debate over abortion in general.

The NY Times - After Years of Political Hype, the Durham Inquiry Failed to Deliver

17 May 2023

The limping conclusion to John H. Durham’s four-year investigation of the Russia inquiry underscores a recurring dilemma in American government: how to shield sensitive law enforcement investigations from politics without creating prosecutors who can run amok, never to be held to account.

At a time when special counsels are proliferating, the much-hyped investigation by Mr. Durham, a special counsel, into the Russia inquiry ended with a whimper that stood in contrast to the countless hours of political furor that spun off from it.

Mr. Durham delivered a report that scolded the F.B.I. but failed to live up to the expectations of supporters of Donald J. Trump that he would uncover a politically motivated “deep state” conspiracy.

He charged no high-level F.B.I. or intelligence official with a crime and acknowledged in a footnote that Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign did nothing prosecutable, either.

Others disagree:

The Washington Post - Opinion - The Durham report is a damning indictment of the FBI - and the media

Note that that's not the Washington Post (although they published it), it's an opinion piece by George Bush's former speech writer who has, among other things, defended the use of torture during the Bush administration, and even written a book about it. And the opinion piece is as sloppy as his book was:

Think of what that means: It was the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee that funded the Steele dossier,

He missed the "based on a fact I just made up" at the end of the sentence.

Maybe he's using his column to audition for Fox?

Independent: Rudy Giuliani said he and Trump were selling pardons for $2m apiece, ex-aide claims

A former aide to former Trump attorney Rudolph Giuliani says he told her the ex-New York City mayor and then-president Donald Trump were offering to sell presidential pardons for $2 million apiece, according to court documents.

The bombshell allegation was levied in a complaint filed against Mr Giuliani by Noelle Dunphy, a New York-based public relations professional who is suing him for “unlawful abuses of power, wide-ranging sexual assault and harassment, wage theft, and other misconduct” committed while she worked for him in 2019 and 2020.

The lawsuit also claims that she was subjected to sexual assault, harassment, wage theft and other misconduct by Mr Giuliani, and alleges that she was forced to perform sex acts on him and work in the nude.

In her civil complaint against the ex-Trump attorney, Ms Duphy described an interaction she allegedly had with Mr Giuliani on or about 16 February 2019, when he was serving as Mr Trump’s personal attorney and attempting to dig up overseas dirt on then-former vice president Joe Biden, who at the time was two months away from entering the 2020 presidential race against Mr Trump.

She writes that as they reviewed emails between him and Ukrainian government officials, she asked if he had to register as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act and offered to do the required paperwork for him.

The former mayor replied that he was allowed to violate Fara and other US laws because “[he had] immunity”, according to the lawsuit.

She then states that Mr Giuliani asked her “if she knew anyone in need of a pardon” because he was “selling pardons for $2 million, which he and President Trump would split”.

“He told Ms Dunphy that she could refer individuals seeking pardons to him, so long as they did not go through “the normal channels” of the Office of the Pardon Attorney, because correspondence going to that office would be subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act,” the suit added.

Forced to perform sex acts and work in the nude? In this day and age, even with Gulliani, I would think that's unlikely.

The Washington Post - The curious question of the alleged $2 million pardons

17 May 2023

The allegation comes in a lawsuit filed this week by Noelle Dunphy, a woman who worked for former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani from 2019 until 2021. It reads as follows:

[Giuliani] asked Ms. Dunphy if she knew anyone in need of a pardon, telling her that he was selling pardons for $2 million, which he and President Trump would split.” ...

It’s worth noting that in addition to screenshots of alleged text message exchanges between Giuliani and Dunphy, the lawsuit also includes numerous references to conversations between Dunphy and Giuliani having been recorded. ...

The allegation that Giuliani was offering pardons for $2 million has been made before.

In January 2021, shortly before Trump left office, the New York Times reported that former CIA officer John Kiriakou had been “told that Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani could help him secure a pardon for $2 million.”

Kiriakou rejected the request, but an associate worried about the legality of such an offer tipped off the FBI. Kiriakou was not granted a pardon.

It's a civil damages case. Guiliani may have to pay but there's no other consequence. It's not a criminal conviction. Like Trump's recent sexual assault civil trial. Also, there's no direct evidence of Trump's involvement at this time.

Honestly Giuliani recordings are sexually perverse, racist and offensive the shock comedians Louis C.K. and Ricky Gervais would say "that seems excessive"

Vanity Fair: Rudy Giuliani Accused of Being a Rapist, Racist, and Really Bad Lawyer
...
Giuliani and Ms. Dunphy also discussed during [her job] interview that she one day write a book on Giuliani and Trump.

Giuliani gave Ms. Dunphy permission to record her interactions with Giuliani anytime, anywhere, as well as Giuliani’s interactions with others.

Giuliani thereafter continually permitted and authorized Ms. Dunphy to make such recordings.

He never asked her to stop recording any interaction.

At times, Giuliani pressed “record” himself on Ms. Dunphy’s cell phone to record their conversations.
