When CNN reported on Wednesday night that special counsel Jack Smith has a recording of former president Donald Trump boasting at his Bedminster, N.J., club in 2021 that he had a highly classified multipage document relating to war plans against Iran, months of punditry that Trump would never be indicted went out the window. ...

This evidence effectively destroys whatever defense Trump was trying to concoct (he didn’t know there were classified documents, he declassified them, he thought they were not classified). ...

The last time such a damning piece of evidence (a “smoking gun”) came to light, Richard M. Nixon’s presidency was effectively over. (He left office less than a week later.)

News reports now indicate the federal grand jury hearing the documents case will meet this week.

An indictment, if there is one, could come within days.

Hopefully, Smith will have no choice but to recommend indictment, and Attorney General Garland will have no choice but to follow the recommendation. 😐

Mike Pence tears into Donald Trump at 2024 campaign launch - BBC News

The Republican accused Mr Trump of being unfaithful to the US constitution and of abandoning conservative values.

The former Indiana governor and congressman formally commenced his White House campaign on Wednesday.

The move pits him against his two-time running mate, who he served under in the White House from 2017-21.

At a speech in Ankeny, Iowa, Mr Pence argued that Mr Trump had encouraged the mob that attacked the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, and had incorrectly asserted that Mr Pence had the power to overturn the election result.

"But the American people deserve to know that on that day, President Trump also demanded that I choose between him and the constitution," he said.

"Now, voters will be faced with the same choice: I chose the constitution and I always will."

He added that Mr Trump's actions on 6 January should disqualify him from returning to power.

That changes the game if Pence and DeSantis are on the attack. I rate Pence with a good chance if he's going to take it to DeSantis. This changes the game for Christie too. For a while there it appeared Christie would be the only anti-Trump contender. Christie now has the chance to articulate some policy in between scandal questions. Seems like Haley is running for vice but you never know.

I don't. The role of Pence was to be the perfect milquetoast VP, no chance of ever becoming a threat to Trump, or even being visible next to Trump. He played the role perfectly (and I'm sure Mother approved), but beyond that he's not good for much.

Well we'll see. He's good at looking presidential. If he can hold that against Trump sufficiently while the rest descend into the necessary bunfight for recognition he might come out looking like the only viable candidate.

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to decide whether a California lawyer may trademark the phrase “Trump too small,” a reference to a taunt from Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Mr. Rubio said Donald J. Trump had “small hands,” adding: “And you know what they say about guys with small hands.”

The lawyer, Steve Elster, said in his trademark application that he wanted to convey the message that “some features of President Trump and his policies are diminutive.”

He sought to use the phrase on the front of T-shirts with a list of Mr. Trump’s positions on the back. For instance: “Small on civil rights.”
