The NY Times - Two Trump Lawyers Quit a Day After His Indictment

09 June 2023

Two of former President Donald J. Trump’s lawyers who had represented him in the classified documents investigation resigned from his legal team the day after he was indicted, according to a statement they released on Friday.

The lawyers, James Trusty and John Rowley, left Mr. Trump’s defense team in a state of chaos and confusion as he faced the most serious legal threat of his career: a 37-count indictment filed in Miami ...

Mr. Trusty and Mr. Rowley were two of the three lawyers who attended a meeting with Justice Department officials - including the special counsel, Jack Smith - three days before the indictment.

Wise men.  😉

Seriously, for a bunch of deplorables that just a few short years ago were going around saying things like "F--K YOUR FEELINGS", they sure seem to have a lot of feelings now.

I imagine the conversation went like this:

Trump to lawyers: "I picked you for the totally false classified documents case because you were already representing me in the New York state criminal case.

I thought you were ready for the big leagues, against those bunch of left-wing radicals in the FBI, but you're as big a disappointment as my stupid kid, Eric.

Now I'm getting pulled up in front of a federal judge.

People say nobody knows more than me about law, but you wouldn't listen to me. Sad.

Don't expect to get paid till you do better."

Lawyer #1: "You already weren't paying us. Where's all the money you promised from the sheep you've been fleecing?"

Lawyer #2: "That's it. I quit! Hope you like wearing orange."

Yes. Yes I am concerned. I'm concerned that an a-hole like Trump - who should have known better - thought he could get away with this sort of thing.

Also: a good CNN walkthrough of the indictment: https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2023/06/politics/annotated-trump-indictment-dg/

Inside the twisted mind of Donald John Trump:

The Washington Post - Trump’s disdain for intelligence rules foretold his indictment

10 June 2023

During his four years in the White House, Donald Trump routinely flouted the laws, rules and conventions that govern the handling of classified information.

He tweeted a photo of an Iranian missile launch site, which revealed the capabilities of U.S. spy satellites. He tipped off the Russians to a foreign ally’s source inside a terrorist organization, potentially putting the life of an agent at risk. He took transcripts of his calls with foreign leaders as well as photos and charts used in his intelligence briefings to his private residence with no explanation, and aides sometimes lost track of the sensitive documents. ...

In some ways, the historic moment where Trump finds himself now was predictable, say former officials who worked for him and experts that observed his behavior. As president, Trump chafed against procedures designed to protect secrets that he saw as restraints on his authority, enforced by an intelligence bureaucracy that he held in deep suspicion. ...

Trump fixated on the heads of the CIA and FBI as ringleaders of a “Deep State” conspiracy trying to trash his reputation and sink his presidency. ...

Trump never hid his disdain for the officials who advised him.

Trump's right: This whole thing is shameful.

But only because his treasonous transgressions don't carry the death penalty.

The Washington Post - Opinion - The classified documents indictment is a stunning display of Trump’s narcissism

10 June 2023

Part of the explanation may be that of Trump as the eternal toddler: He wants what he wants. The papers are his toys, and he will not give them back.

I don’t want anybody looking,” Trump is quoted as telling his lawyer, in the lawyer’s damning memo-to-self. “I don’t want anybody looking through my boxes, I really don’t.” My boxes. Mine, mine, mine.

These toys impress - and Trump’s pathetic need to puff himself up cannot be underestimated.

Trump says he's not going anywhere, although if he (somehow) becomes the nominee and (somehow) wins...two thoughts from me: (1) how could he run the country from prison? He can't fly overseas and meet foreign leaders, etc and (2) if Americans are really that stupid to vote a prisoner into office...well, they deserve everything that they get.

Reuters - Trump is 'toast' if classified records case is proven, ex-AG says

WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Sunday defended Special Counsel Jack Smith's 37-count indictment against Donald Trump on Sunday, saying if the allegations the former president willfully retained hundreds of highly classified documents are proven true, then "he's toast."

"I was shocked by the degree of sensitivity of these documents and how many there were, ... and I think the counts under the Espionage Act that he willfully retained those documents are solid counts," Barr told "Fox News Sunday."

"If even half of it is true, then he's toast."

The comments from Barr, who was Trump's attorney general from February of 2019 through December of 2020, are notable and were made at a time when many other prominent Republicans have been hesitant to criticize the former president.

The NY Times - Trump Appointee Will Remain Judge in Documents Case

10 June 2023

The criminal case against President Donald J. Trump over his hoarding of classified documents was randomly assigned to Judge Aileen M. Cannon, a court official for the Southern District of Florida said on Saturday.

The chief clerk of the federal court system there, Angela E. Noble, also confirmed that Judge Cannon would continue to oversee the case unless she recused herself.

The news of Judge Cannon’s assignment raised eyebrows because of her role in an earlier lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump challenging the F.B.I.’s search of his Florida club and estate, Mar-a-Lago.

In issuing a series of rulings favorable to him, Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee, effectively disrupted the investigation until a conservative appeals court ruled she never had legitimate legal authority to intervene.

Under the district court’s procedures, new cases are randomly delegated to a judge who sits in the division where the matter arose or a neighboring one, even if it relates to a previous case. ...

Is this a new definition of "random"?

EDIT  My bold.

I agree with you, but how many times has Trump been called "toast" (or similar) before and just carries on doing what he's always done, with next to no accountability whatsoever?

More to the point, I can see his MAGA base caring 0 about anything other than "he's our man! OWN THE DEMS!" or whatever their stupid slogan is - even if he's found guilty and serves time in jail, he'll keep playing victim and his base will just keep lapping it up; more to the point, they will vote for the a-hole and there's still a chance he could win.

And the Genuflecting Toadies are coming out to lick Trumps derrière:

Vivek Ramawsamy's promise to pardon former president Donald Trump if he's elected.

and from another article: Trump’s indictment divides 2024 Republican hopefuls

Ramaswamy, who vowed to pardon Trump if elected president before details of the 37-count indictment were revealed, doubled down Sunday, telling CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” that after “reading that indictment and looking at the selective omissions of both fact and law,” he was “even more convinced that a pardon is the right answer here.”

Who the heck is Vivek Ramawsamy's ? They are calling him a hopeful - more like a doubtful!

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
