@SaltyNZ:

It's only "communism" if the others do it.

Otherwise it's just sparkling intrusion into personal freedom rights.

It is only communism if it comes from the region of the Moskva River, in Russia. Otherwise it's socialism and we can't have this here.

How well will they do?

Come to think of it - as I didn't really follow National's campaign, apart from the tax cuts they were endlessly crowing about, when were they meant to kick in anyway? Tomorrow? Next week? Next month? Next year?

No phones in schools too, I agree with that

It's not phone, sir.

It's a very small form-factor touch enabled PC....

Sir, I am not texting on my phone... that would be illegal.
The school requires me to have [tablet, chromebook, laptop] for education purposes.
I am of course only using imesaage, discord, whatapp for totally approved educational activities sir.
Nothing illegal here.

You are not doing 1000 lines as punishment, its an opportunity to improve your hand writing...

And after the 3rd time, you are not suspended, you are "working from home"

Either way its a win, laptops and others don't have SIMS.

School requirements will also be no devices with SIMS are permitted....and I guess one way of enforcing that will be that actual laptops are required.

So far all I see is the kids learning to be antisocial and learning to be a "Sovereign Citizen...your laws don't apply to me", and significant expenses placed on parents of kids are who are being socially responsible . If it's the parents pushing this, god help them when their kids start driving. Do parents really think if they teach their kids to lie/cheat/etc to others they will not lie/cheat/etc to the parents ?

Winston's new policies are about one step from sov-cit already, and he's managed to get most of them into the coalition agreement. Policies like not adopting the new WHO guidelines, and an extra-special inquiry into the COVID response because the inquiry into the COVID response we already had didn't reveal the lizard-people who are secretly running the UN.

That said, it's a fine line: I would define myself as a 'personal' libertarian inasmuch as I believe the government has no right to tell what you can and can't do in private. Where I diverge from actual libertarians of course (apart from the fact that I grew up) is that I also believe those rights end where they conflict with the rights of others. So I'm perfectly comfortable with both it being an absolute right to refuse a vaccination, but also that you don't get to complain about consequences for exercising that right because other people have the right not to get infected by you.

Seeing as how pandering to the antivaxxers and other associated nutjobs got him enough extra votes to return to power, he will probably want to lean into it harder next time.

OMEGALUL

Ahh yes this mythical LTE and 5G technology does not exist.

It's all good, we can tack on an amendment to this well thought out regulation.
All schools must also have active cell blockers, got to make sure those young’un’s don't get any of those pesky ideas of freedom, responsibility, accountability, innovation, self-expression.
Heaven Judy, they could become those “Sovereign Citizen”

Technology is the root of all evil, It all started when they let those kids dance to that devil music… that Rock n Roll. Then it was those comic books and the DnD…. What is it call dungeons and devils. I don’t know where our poor God-fearing nation is heading!
Also those video games, teaching people to do all the crimes, I hear there is this one video game where you steal cars! Judy, you hear that, we will have youths stealing our car! It is all because those youths are not respecting the laws and their elders.

It's a crying shame I tell you Judy.

By the way this is how it is coming across and it is a bit yikes.

Well I am guessing if that is what you want, Home schooling is the only place you are going to get it.

Meantime, out in the real world, there are rules, there are societal expectations, there are responsibilities and accountability, now the fact you don't like them being applied to you  is neither here nor there, ALL of your rights end where someone else's begin. And the schools rights start at the school gate. If that school is unable to meet your expectations, leave and find another. There are hundreds of other kids who ALSO have rights, as do the teachers.

Do you want schools to have parents and children having legally binding contracts that they need to sign ?
Your freedom is not being impinged on, you can refuse to sign and find another school.
They are not obligated to negotiate with you, these are the school terms of trade, accept or decline.

So again, home schooling sounds the most suitable outcome for you.

That is my point here,

It isn't schools rights or students rights or any of that now is it?
It is Luxon and his coalitions make it a regulation/legislation, schools were doing their own policies for their students and if students & parents didn't like it, they could go to another school.
Schools were able and did ban phones before now.

What I attempting to point out this no phone regulation/legislation is just creating a solution when imo there was not a problem.
Central government doesn't really need to make regulation/legislation for this at all.

Reminds me of the up roar when the idea that covid vacancies should be mandatory for workers.
In the end it was managed better by employer and their employees.

Side note:

I am not in school as a student or teacher, have a full-time job and have no wish to go back to High School, which was decades ago.

Edit

People might want to know what my biais is, why and I bothering to talk about this issue when it does not affect me at all.
The honest truth, those kids/students are people.
Life is hard for everyone but these people don't have the right to vote or have their own say yet.
They are children, we will for sure as tax the shit out of them when they start working, but until they are 18, generally none of them get a say in what the country decides for them.
Kids should be protected, not have stupid laws made up to target them to earn brownie points with certain groups of New Zealand.
I am a "Gen Millennial", when these kids grow up, I don't want them thinking about us the same way that "boomer" is a derogatory term these days.
Kids and future kids, because laws can last a long time, are going to be the back bone of the country when I am old... and if I get to retire before death, I would like for them not to look at me as a tax burden.

As for Covid. There are Nurses etc who have lodged legal actions against medical practices for having to dismiss those people because of the mandates.

The honest truth is that those kids live in a community. I have friends who ar childless, they do not get a tax break, yet they pay for someone else's child to be education, get medical care etc etc etc.

Meantime the kids also get free dental, children's prices for things, etc, ie the benefits of being a child. At what age to they become "adults" ?, why not a year younger ?

Kids are NOT being targeted , the amount of bullying by phones etc is huge, as is grooming, sexting, etc. They are having a rule put in place, you know just like no driving and texting, no speeding, no drink driving. Adults have rules too, and the punishments for adults vs children are far harder.

And under your regime they will say "You should have made allowance for your own retirement, you can not demand I support you, you are an adult. How dare you expect to take the money WE earned off us to support you"

Unless schools can put in fair and reasonable rules (eg no phones, no matter what you think) then teaching simply becomes harder. Teachers already cop a lot of abuse from parents, they think their Childs failure is the schools fault, not that they did not encourage the child, get them to do homework, make threats against the school when their child was put on detention, etc etc etc. We already have a teacher shortage, we already have fewer parents willing to go on school trips, coach school sports, be referees etc because of this. And MY experience is that the ones who believe they have the most rights are also the ones who will never offer their help for any of these outside of hours things.

Being told "No" is also a part of life.

If your intention is to make schools such a garbage job that ONLY private schools will be able to offer any actual education, then you are heading the right direction.

THAT after all is the libertarian way.
