A few related news stories from around the web this afternoon:

https://www.19fortyfive.com/2023/09/donald-trump-just-made-a-total-clown-of-himself/ >> I didn't think he ever stopped? Although this guy's whataboutism is obvious (he mentions "Biden family crimes" - and gets totally destroyed in the comments on his story).

https://boingboing.net/2023/09/29/maga-witnesses-admit-total-lack-of-first-hand-evidence-against-biden.html >> MAGA fail 😀

https://plus.thebulwark.com/p/the-gops-accidental-case-for-joe >> this opinion piece makes the argument that the winner of the most recent Republican primary debate was Biden.

geekIT:

TRUMP UNIVERSITY GRADUATES OUTRAGED THEY WEREN'T TAUGHT TO DEFRAUD BANKS

“If I had learned to defraud banks, my career would have played out very differently,” Tracy Klugian, class of 2006, said. “As it is, I’ve gone bankrupt four times.”

Look Tracy, the fact that you have gone bankrupt many times could also be due to the fact that you are too stupid to do business according to universal rules. 🙄

Carol Foyler said that, given the school’s failure to teach the fundamentals of asset overvaluation and bank swindling, her Trump University diploma “is worthless. They claimed I'd be taught all of Donald Trump’s real-estate secrets,” she said. “But they skipped bullshit.”

Well, Carol. With this diploma you can still wash dishes, which in the past was the start of many a billionaire's career in the USA. Give it a try! 😄

Trump speaks at a union workers for Trump rally at an auto industry plant with no union members. Reporters find it difficult to even find an auto worker in the crowd among those holding auto workers for Trump signs:

The New Republic: It’s unclear how many union workers, or even autoworkers, attended Trump’s speech. One person held a sign that said “union members for Trump” but told reporter Craig Mauger she wasn’t in the union. Another person held a sign that said “auto workers for Trump” but admitted he wasn’t an autoworker.

True to form.

https://www.19fortyfive.com/2023/09/donald-trumps-biggest-weakness-has-been-exposed/ >> indeed it has, although I think a number of people knew this already. The comments by the judge were absolutely spot-on.

Trump's values his reputation as a successful businessman is the keystone to his self-worth. It's certainly more important than the US, even more than his family. He's showing up as this trial, though he won't be allowed to talk at the trial.

So losing his New York business license may seem trivial, many of his most prized possessions will be lost.

In 2001, on "9/11", talked about the day’s tragic events. Then, oddly, he turned his attention to the height of one of his properties, which he falsely claimed was now the tallest building in lower Manhattan.

“[Trump Tower] actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan. And it was actually – before the World Trade Center – was the tallest. And then when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second-tallest, and now it’s the tallest.”

ABC News: Trump expected to attend opening of his civil fraud trial in New York on Monday: Sources

Former President Donald Trump is expected to attend the opening of his civil fraud trial in New York on Monday, multiple sources familiar with the decision told ABC News.
...
Last week, the presiding judge, Arthur Engoron, granted the state's motion for partial summary judgment, effectively deciding the core of the case, finding "conclusive evidence" Trump and the others "overvalued the assets reported in the statements of financial condition between 17.27-38.51%; this amounts to a discrepancy of between $812 million and $2.2 billion."

The bench trial [no jury] will help Engoron decide how much monetary penalties Trump should pay. The state has asked for about $250 million.

The NY Times - As His Fraud Trial Begins, Trump Looks to Capitalize on It

01 Oct 23

Former President Donald J. Trump is expected to attend the opening of the civil trial in the New York attorney general’s fraud case against him on Monday, as his political team seeks to turn it into a rallying cry for supporters.

The decision to show up voluntarily in court by Mr. Trump, who has already been compelled to courthouses in four different criminal arraignments this year, underscores how personally aggrieved Mr. Trump feels by the accusations of fraud, as well as his own self-confidence that showing up will help his legal cause. ...

The former president is enraged by the fraud charges and furious with both the judge and the attorney general.

And Mr. Trump, who is a control enthusiast, believes that trials have gone poorly for him when he hasn’t been present, and he hopes to affect the outcome this time ...

"This is the new post-shame period of politics."   😡

Will Melania visit him there? That depends on how long he is in prison and the olfactory conditions there. Her handbags will certainly get bigger and heavier soon. 😉

The Don in Self-Destruct Mode

The NY Times - Trump Begins Fraud Trial by Attacking Attorney General and Judge

Outside the courtroom Monday, Mr. Trump spoke to reporters, telling them the New York attorney general was trying to damage him because he was doing so well in the polls.

There is no crime,” he said. “The crime is against me.” ...

Trump called for Justice Engoron to be disbarred. “This is a judge that should be out of office,” he said. “This is a judge that some people say could be charged criminally for what he’s doing.”

Stupid. Trump is beginning the trial at a serious disadvantage. He has been found guilty. Publicly antagonizing the judge overseeing his sentencing is not clever.   🙄

EDIT  Note the blue tie!   ☺️

In case anyone is following on New Zealand time, in New York it's 6pm when it's 11 am here.

The New York Times is probably the best source. Obviously I recommend subscribing. If you just want to try-before-you-buy, you'll get a number of free pages per month. To extend this period, you can temporarily block Javascript. Again New York Times, and all print media, deserve your support.

Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani: "There's so much at stake today in the civil fraud case.

Even though Trump can't go to jail, we're talking about tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars.

And, of course, setting aside the potential judgement, Trump has already lost his business licenses and can't maintain his real estate empire there in New York.

He may be forced to liquidate at a loss because the commercial real estate market is depressed right now."
