The NY Times - Trump Will Not Testify as Scheduled in Civil Fraud Trial

Donald Trump has decided not to return to the witness stand to testify on Monday as he had planned, setting up an abrupt and anticlimactic ending to the defense’s case in his civil fraud trial in Manhattan.

 

As recently as Sunday morning, Mr. Trump had been expected to testify in his own defense in the case, in which the New York attorney general has accused him of fraudulently inflating his net worth. 

 

But just before 3:30 in the afternoon, Mr. Trump announced on his social media platform in two all-caps messages that he had already testified “very successfully and conclusively” and that “I will not be testifying on Monday.”

 

His about-face all but ends the lengthy and chaotic proceedings in the fraud trial, which began in early October. ...

 

 

A logical or cowardly decision - or both?  🙄

The NY Times - Special Counsel Asks Supreme Court to Decide Whether Trump Is Immune From Prosecution

Jack Smith, the special counsel prosecuting former President Donald J. Trump on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election, asked the Supreme Court on Monday to rule on Mr. Trump’s argument that he is immune from prosecution.

 

The request was unusual in two ways: Mr. Smith asked the justices to rule before an appeals court acted, and he urged them to move with exceptional speed. ... 

 

Mr Smith said that speed was of the essence, as Mr. Trump’s appeal of a trial judge’s ruling rejecting his claim of immunity suspends the trial of the charges against him. 

 

The trial is scheduled to begin on March 4 in Federal District Court in Washington. ...

 

Winning the appeal of the immunity decision was only one of Mr. Trump’s goals in challenging the decision. All along, he and his lawyers have had an alterative strategy: to delay the election interference trial for as long as possible.

Former White House attorney Ty Cobb is convinced reason finally won out over Donald Trump's ego ...

 

Cobb appeared on CNN Monday night to discuss the former president's decision not to take the stand in his $250 million civil fraud trial.

 

"He was not an effective witness, no matter you know, what the PR is from the other side," Cobb said. "He's not going to get cross-examined much on what he's going to say, he will get taken through a litany of all the lies that he's told during the relevant period for this trial."

 

"He really has nothing to add to the evidentiary pile, in this case, at this stage in the game," Cobb said. "He's already testified and in an unhinged manner, he made multiple, multiple admissions that severely damaged this case."

 

Cobb also argued Trump's testimony would not have been likely to help him in his bid for the White House in 2024.

 

"I'm sure they would probably take the top 40 hits and expose him as someone with no credibility" ... "That doesn't help him politically."

Those of us who don't like Trump, in America and elsewhere, are making a huge mistake. According to all the polls, Trump is getting more and more support compared to Biden. He would easily win the next election. Not because people like him, but because they like Biden less.

 

There seems to be an attitude amongst those of us who oppose Trump, that his victory is simply too horrible to contemplate. Somehow, by some miracle, it simply won't happen. The polls are premature and things will change when the election gets closer. Voters will come to their senses when they realise the consequences of a Trump victory.  He will be arrested and thrown in jail. Some other miracle will occur to prevent the unthinkable. That attitude is apparent in this thread. The tone of most posts seems to be that Trump can't possibly win. He is incoherent. He is demented. He is a clown. No-one in their right mind could possibly vote for him.

 

That kind of thinking is living in a fool's paradise. Unfortunately, it is not limited to this thread. Most progressive media and politicians in America also seem to be trapped in this bubble.

 

It is way past time to get real. Unless something entirely unexpected happens, Trump will win. He will do the things he has been saying he would. Those of us who think this is too horrible to contemplate, better start contemplating it. This is going to be our future and we are going to have to figure out how we are going to live with it.

I hope Biden wins, but I am also conscious of the fact that Trump could indeed still win.

 

Mind you though, if Americans are that stupid to vote the same lying conman in twice, well - I think the ones who voted for him (and let's be honest, Trump couldn't give a flying f--k about them) deserve everything they get.

 

I guess if there's any consolation if he does win again - and there is still that possibility - at least he can't run a second time, although given the shocking events of January 6, 2021 I have no doubt the orange buffoon would try something - anything - to stay in power.

That may or may not be true. Either way, The United States of America is a global power. When the elephant sneezes the world may catch a cold. Arguably the world is continuing to deal with the consequences of four years of Trump. There are many examples.

This is a good illustration of my point. As long as people think of him as an 'orange buffoon' they fail to take the threat he poses seriously enough. If he becomes president again, he won't have trouble finding a way to stay in office, either overtly or through proxies. He can take lessons from his friend Putin. 

 

If Trump becomes fuehrer of America, that will directly affect us here in New Zealand and throughout the rest of the world. He may be an American phenomenon, but he will be everyone's problem.
