An optimistic prediction ? ...

The Atlantic - Why Trump Won’t Win

15 Dec 2023

Writing for the Atlantic, columnist Hussein Ibish suggests that history is not on Trump's side and that the MAGA movement is winding down.

"Trump has a strong record of electoral losses with his 2016 upset, which apparently surprised even him, as the lone exception. His party suffered the standard midterm defeat in 2018. Then he lost the 2020 election. Then Republicans lost control of the Senate after Georgia’s runoff in early 2021. Then his party was denied the standard midterm victory in 2022, barely eking out a four-vote House majority thanks in large part to his own handpicked, election-denying candidates, almost all of whom lost in competitive races.

"There is no obvious reason that 2024 should constitute a sudden break from this pattern of MAGA defeat.

"Trump’s record as president and since - January 6, the devastating testimony from his former senior officials, the ongoing trials, and whatever additional self-inflicted wounds he delivers - will contrast very poorly with Biden’s track record and steady leadership.

"By November, enough Americans will surely understand that they aren’t voting for Biden over Trump so much as voting for the Constitution over a would-be authoritarian.

"The case against Trump’s reelection is obvious and damning. As long as his opponents prosecute that case - and they will - Trump isn’t going to win."

I think that view is a little optimistic.

I wish it were accurate, but I think it's a little optimistic too. There's still a chance Trump could beat Biden next year, which I find quite depressing.

As for the "MAGA movement winding down" comment - yes, the media don't really cover all the stupid stuff says or all his rallies like they used to, but he still pulls a fair few people to his rallies who hang on his every word (why, I don't know)...however number of attendees at rallies don't directly translate into votes, either.

He is leading in the Republican polling for President and a few show him ahead of Biden in some swing states. Having said that I would like to see Nikki Haley improve her polling, I think she might give him a real run for his money.

Also - I meant to post this earlier:

This young lad is actually quite good at asking tricky questions of the MAGA crowd. He doesn't argue, doesn't raise his voice with them. Just asks them basic questions that point out the contradictions in a lot of what Trump has said, and the MAGA crowd accordingly get themselves tangled up in the knots of their own logic, half the time. His videos and shorts make for interesting watching.

Oh lol, anything to play the poor, hard-done-by billionaire. Just like the time he tried to pay a lawyer with a horse. No, not a house, a horse.

Trump has come a long way since that time when he owned a horse: now he owns millions of sheep.

Newsweek: Mary Trump Reacts to Donald Trump's $40M in Undisclosed Cash Transfers

Mary Trump, the estranged niece of Donald Trump, has urged authorities to "drop the hammer on my uncle" after it was revealed the Trump Organization had transferred around $40 million, including $29 million to the former president himself, without disclosing it to a New York court.

The Trump Organization is currently being overseen by a court-appointed monitor, former U.S. district court judge Barbara Jones, who was assigned to the role due to the ongoing $250 million civil lawsuit against Trump and a number of his associates which was brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Under this provision, the company is required to report any transfer of assets exceeding $5 million, but according to a letter Jones wrote to the court on Wednesday they failed to do this for a number of payments. This included the transfer of $29 million to Trump, for the payment of taxes, along with a $5.5 million payment related to a civil sexual assault case brought against the 2024 Republican frontrunner by writer E. Jean Carroll.
...
Mary Trump, a prominent critic of her uncle's politics and business activities, responded to the allegation that Trump Organization assets hadn't been properly disclosed on her Substack blog.

She wrote: "Why is this so bad for him? Because the court, specifically ordered Donald NOT to shift his assets around—just as if he were a MOB boss.

"If this were ANY other ex-president in modern history, this would not have been ignored by corporate media. But Donald is so egregious, so vile in his transgressions, that his alleged defiance of the court order is just par for the course. But I won't give him a free pass. Everyone should know about this—and no prosecutor should ignore it."

Rolling Stone - ‘Dictator’ Trump Plans to Deploy Massive Number of Troops on U.S. Soil

14 Dec 2023

Donald Trump’s plans to give himself sweeping powers on “day one” of a new administration include sending vast numbers of U.S. troops - potentially “hundreds of thousands” - to close the southern border and to help build a new network of immigrant detention camps, three people familiar with the situation tell Rolling Stone.

Trump and some of his lieutenants have repeatedly stated that any second administration must treat migrant crossings as a “war” on American soil.

During Trump’s first term, officials and attorneys had thwarted similar plans for a military police force at the border due to legal fears, according to former top officials such as Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

Now, the former president is determined to surround himself with aides and MAGA-friendly lawyers who can make such draconian policies “perfectly legal” in a potential second term ...

I'm seeing a lot of people on Reddit who are genuinely afraid that if Trump gets in again, there's a risk of it being the last election they ever have. It is concerning when thoughts like that are even being voiced with a straight face.

Maybe they shouldn't vote for him then. Maybe they should persuade their friends not to vote for him. Maybe they should knock on doors, hand out pamphlets, explain to others why it might not be a good idea to vote for him.

Yes, quite possible. Although I wouldn't discount Mercrump, Venial or even Marshump. Of course, there's Jumpher, Shaturn, or Rocksoff in the Hemastroid Belt. But Hisuranus, Numpty and Plumpo might be too far out, even for the Orange Donnies. They prefer to be closer to the Sump.

The Washington Post - Trump quotes Putin condemning American democracy, praises autocrat Orban

16 Dec 2023

DURHAM, N.H. - Republican polling leader Donald Trump approvingly quoted autocrats Vladimir Putin of Russia and Viktor Orban of Hungary, part of an ongoing effort to deflect from his criminal prosecutions and spin alarms about eroding democracy against President Biden. ...

In the speech, Trump also repeated his own inflammatory language against undocumented immigrants, by accusing them of “poisoning the blood of our country” - a phrase [reminiscent of] Hitler in his book “Mein Kampf,” in which he told Germans to “care for the purity of their own blood” by eliminating Jews. ...

The comments came as experts, historians and political opponents have voiced growing alarm about Trump’s rhetoric, ideas and emerging plans for a second term, pointing to parallels to past and present authoritarian leaders.

Looks like your not allowed to carry your own signs when you're behind Trump. Looks like you have to pick one of four stock cards.

Way to trust your supporters, Trump! :(
