We had a couple of banana plants when I lived in the BOP (near Tauranga). Production was patchy, but we did get bananas most years.

I haven't got a lot of time for Winston. He is a pain in the arse politically and he panders to a voter base who have had it good and insist on their right to bleed the country dry for more money when other people need it far more.

However he is a statesman as much as he is a politician. He's not going to Muldoon the country into the abyss over a six week period. He'll try to be a steady hand and give himself something to look back on fondly once he's old(er) and sipping (even more) whiskeys up North. I just don't think he has anything to prove to anyone other than himself and he gains nothing by being Opposition Winston when he's acting PM.

I'm trying to imagine Peters in military uniform, tunic plastered in medals and gold braid, with a banana plantation as a background - but in my mind all I see is him standing in a kiwifruit orchard wearing a snappy dark suit decorated with cigarette ash patches.

Funded by us taxpayers. I guess its his right, but if he loses his case does that mean we should be seeking to recover the full costs of his legal bill? I think so.

The government is really the taxpayer. it really does not matter which way you look at it.

I very much doubt he will be paying for it himself? If he loses, I sure hope they go after him to recover some of this money.

Peters is about to become Acting Prime Minister yet one of his listed targets is Attorney General David Parker who sits with him in the cabinet room.

The Solicitor General's department, Crown Law, will now have to defend the ministers and departmental chiefs - all at taxpayers' expense if the current cabinet allows funding for the National ex-ministers.

@Wiggum I am not sure what you are getting at here, are you saying that the tax payer is funding his case because part of his income is paid by the Government? If the case was being paid directly from Government funds that would have to be declared. My understanding is that Winston Peters is suing as Winston Peters,citizen and not Winston Peters Deputy PM which he has a right to do so.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

If he is suing the government, then taxpayers will be paying the lawyers involved in defending the government, the salaries of ministers and staff whose time is wasted dealing with it instead of working and so on and so forth.

@MikeB4? Who runs this government that Mr Peters is suing?

If he is doing it as a "private citizen" then surely this should happen in his personal time? Who is paying for a defense team?

Here we have a newly acting Prime Minister and his very first act is to sue his own government, and our most senior civil servant. He should be focused on government, and New Zealand (ie doing his job as PM), not personal issues. Very bad political move by Winston don't you think?

@Geektastic yes he is suing the Government which he has a right to do so and if he wins the case he has the right to be compensated. If he loses the defendants have the right to ask the court to award costs.

If I read you correctly by being in Government Mr Peters should forgo his rights, now that would be a bad political move. As for the defense team that will be paid for by the defendants which is normal in any legal case.

Given how long it takes for these cases to get to court, The PM will probably be back in the Beehive and Winston Peters will again be Deputy PM. If his employer requires him to take leave to do the case then so be it.

If he wants to pursue with his madness of suing his own government, then maybe he should do that on his own watch, ie outside of business hours would be a good start. Or take leave without pay to do it.

Mine would be that he should not be awarded anything. He's a politician, who volunteered to be under scrutiny and was aware of all that may entail, such as allegedly being the subject of leaks regarding allegedly dodgy practices. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
