Yeah I'd imagine so. He wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed but his replacement (either of the two options) don't seem any better.

Not stepping down, unless the party votes against him. He also questioned his primary challenger's eligibility to even be an MP due to conflicting business interests and wants that resolved before his party votes on Friday.

I think earlier legal opinion indicated Dutton was in the clear regarding this, and I imagine Dutton did his home work prior. I guess we will find out tomorrow.

I don't think any of this matters a jot for NZ.

New leader will mean new policy directions and priorities. I think Dutton is part of the faction who want to deport as many NZers from Australia as they can and may step up the process. Also a big stop the boats crowd and wants NZ to provide more assistance with that.

Given that he's a Rhodes Scholar, has a BCL from Oxford, practiced as a lawyer, had been a merchant banker, and is a multi-millionaire, one would suspect he's not exactly stupid and is in all likelihood (objectively speaking) more intelligent than people who utter cheap shots like yours.

Edit: For clarity, I should add that I am saying this as someone who despises conservative politics of all strands.

Turnbull has been told by Liberal leadership that he must hold a meeting. They have told Turnbull that requiring 43 signatures to be on a letter is unreasonable. It seems that Tony Abbott agreed to such a meeting when only two or three back benchers asked for one.

If Turnbull does resign his seat immediately the next liberal candidate for Wentworth will be a 'Turnbull'. Someone who has lived in Wentworth for years, has at least been a Bondi Nipper if not a fully fledged lifeguard, have fairly progressive social values, be a well established lawyer or accountant, be squeaky clean, have the potential to be a cabinet member.

As holding Wentworth will be vital the liberals would not risk putting up a clone of Peter Dutton.

If Turnbull does look set to resign from parliament - that won't be working in Dutton's favour in the meeting now.

They could lose a safe seat - and thus lose everything. Would serve them right if that happens.

I understand that Wentworth had one of the largest majority "yes" votes in the same sex marriage plebiscite. Dutton's views on that subject are well known.

They're bloody quick to turn on their own over there.

Can't help but think that if Morrison eases back on his quite hard right stance in order to make sure Turnbull's vacated seat is safe, Dutton will bide his time and pounce before a general election - if the polls don't look good - and my guess is they won't look good.

There was only 5 votes between them. That's hardly a united party in my view.

I wonder how many were strong opposed to vs had a slight preference for, one leader or another.
