Mixed feelings about this. Malcolm Turnbull abandoned his emission policy principles to keep the baubles of office but the awful Peter Dutton is gone. Any chance that kiwis will now stop being treated like something scraped off the bottom of ozzie shoes?

Not for long though, probably. There's a fundamental division that's emerged in right-wing politics - globally, with hard-line anti-liberal, anti-multiculture, anti-environment, authoritarian nationalists challenging moderate and classical liberal factions.

It'll probably happen here too - the seeds have already been sewn. Moderates are probably doomed.

Look at the senseless and unthinking bile being spewed in the Jacinda thread circle-jerk.

I left it long ago for exactly that reason. I have better things to do with my remaining years than waste them listening to that kind of bad-tempered crap.

Resigning means Dutton will have more time & space to plot against Turnbull. Turnbull can hardly repeat what he did today without becoming a laughing stock.

I very much doubt that we have heard the last of Peter Dutton. He looks and sounds like a guy who wants the top job.

My guess is that when Turnbull gets rolled Theresa May will still be Prime Minister in the UK! (Which is not saying a lot about the longevity of either of them.)

A couple of little problems though - there's a possible constitutional problem with Dutton re emoluments - that really needs to be sorted, and it's entirely possible that with a one seat majority, someone will cross the floor and force an election.

They also need to sort their shambles out - according to Winston - LOL

According to ABC news at 9 pm another letter is being circulated asking for a party meeting tomorrow.

Give me a break. Your utterly out of control bile spewing rants in the Trump (or in fact any time his name is mentioned anywhere) thread pretty much disqualifies you from critisism of anyone contributing to any other political thread.

I see the leadership challenge has been formalised.

Your defensive response here suggests that he must have touched a nerve. I for one look forward to many more years of Labour rule, if for no other reason just because it annoys you so much.

What a petty nasty post. Disappointing, but unfortunately, not surprising.

Do you read the FUG and think about it before posting - or just go ahead regardless?

I quite specifically avoided making any reference to any person with my comment about the circle-jerk in the Jacinda thread.

You also don't get to decide what disqualifies anybody from criticising senseless and unthinking bile.

And your response to @Fred99 was so warm and fuzzy and generous of spirit. Good to know you would never dream of descending to nastiness and pettiness.

Good lord - another hat in the ring:

Treasurer Scott Morrison will contest the leadership.

Conservative, pro-coal, anti same-sex marriage, criticised by moderate conservatives for flagrantly disregarding human rights.

Turnbull to speak in 14 minutes at 1 pm Australian time.  Sounds like a resignation to me.
