What are the odds of Air Force One being shot down by a missile over Israel? I assume extensive security measures are in place. Is it accompanied by US fighter jets the whole way?

No, Airforce One's self-defence is top secret, but is most certainly in place. Accompanying Airforce One are tanker aircraft, fighter aircraft only in rare, exceptional cases in international or US airspace. Where the machine lands is not known beforehand. But since „the beast" has been moved to the destination in advance, the whole entourage is on hand to pick up the president at the secret landing site.

I was already in a traffic jam for three hours because of Donald when he was in our city for the G7 summit (ok, Putin, Johnson and others from the gang were there too) and was only allowed to drive my car into the street where I live after an ID check. Pissed off at the jerk for taking a sightseeing tour through and over the city in a US helicopter - he could have taken a hop-on hop-off bus tour. 😉

From the POTUS Twitter account:

I just imposed a series of tariffs on goods made in China:

25% on steel and aluminum,
50% on semiconductors,
100% on EVs,
And 50% on solar panels.

China is determined to dominate these industries.

I'm determined to ensure America leads the world in them.

While Trump is especially famous for his stupidity, it seems to be an overall American trait not limited to just him.  Biden is going to make the US "lead the world" by making their industry even less competitive than it already is.  This may have worked in the 1950s when the US led the world in exported goods and so could afford to do things like this, but today it's China, which means all this is doing is further killing US industry and exports.

Is that Trump's account resurfacing an old tweet? Nope no spelling mistakes no capitals and no pictures. I will wait to see all of Biden's policy details and other things planned in combination because on the surface in a snap judgement that is going to slow the adoption of new technology and CO2 reduction in the states unless there are very significant efforts to invest in manufacturing for EVs and solar in particular. Steel and aluminium are probably the easy ones. Overall this turn of events is concerning if not extremely concerning.

Reading back through the last few Tweets the logic is that tariffs on the incoming will balance what USA believes is China subsidising key industries to compete unfairly in the USA market.

Longer speech with more detail then short formal signing

There is a section about expanding the charging network, lower CO2 emissions for the expansion of aluminum and steel capacity, an emphasis throughout is new union jobs at full union wages.

Note: 17 minutes long watch from the beginning any attempt to seek on my mobile device led to buffer seek failure users might have better luck on fibre ; )

As opposed to the US subsidising key industries to compete unfairly in the world market, e.g. the $39 billion handout in the CHIPS act to US semiconductor manufacturers, and that's just one of many, many such.

Not sure who was supposed to have said this, let's give it to Churchill, "our own faults annoy us most when we see them in others".

neb,

To be fair though Europe has also subsidized, tariffed and R&D supported its semiconductor sector.
A number consumed the $ and no longer exist.
Though Infineon, ST Micro and a few are still hanging in there.
Japan similarly and China has been subsidizing big time along with its own trade barriers and such.
Everyone is doing it. The USA fund may also not be large compared with others.

Malaysia, Singapore etc offer substantial subsidies to get industries to site in their countries.
    Regional HQs and such also.

Malaysia also has China companies wanting to take advantage of experience in Penang.
    Predatory or just good business.

    ""
Shortly after a Chinese company opened up nearby, employees at Malaysian contract manufacturer Kemikon walked outside their factory to find sheets of paper stuck to their car windshields.

The flyers were from Fengshi Metal Technology, a Suzhou-based rival that operates in similar areas of semiconductor equipment manufacturing. They promised salaries 30 per cent above the market rate and other “unique opportunities” including overseas travel and free meals.
