The Washington Post - Opinion - Trump’s fascist talk is what’s ‘poisoning the blood of our country’

24 May 2024

As you’ve probably heard, Donald Trump has once again raised a führer.

The former president’s Truth Social account posted a video posing the question “What happens after Donald Trump wins?” and providing a possible answer: In the background was the phrase “unified Reich.

This follows Trump’s echoing Adolf Hitler in campaign speeches, saying that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and calling his opponents “vermin.”

And that, in turn, followed Trump’s dining at Mar-a-Lago with high-profile antisemite Ye (Kanye West) and white supremacist leader Nick Fuentes, who likened incinerating Jews to baking cookies.

Under the three-Reichs-and-you’re-out rule, Trump should be on the bench. Yet he keeps swinging - and this week provided a sobering measure of how numb we have become to his undeniably fascist rhetoric. ...

Robert F Kennedy, "RFK" and Trump are pitching for the libertarian vote.

Libertarian are strange . It's a nebulous meeting of minds so right-wing they become extreme left-wing.

You'll hear anti-science of all political beliefs espousing very libertarians ideals, in particular around vaccines.

Frankly sometimes I have trouble distinguishing anarchists from Libertarians. I've never heard of two Libertarians agreeing on common goals.

Between "RFK" and Trump, I'd say RFK is a better match.

NBC News: Libertarian convention crowd appears hostile to Trump ahead of Saturday speech

Vivek Ramaswamy was booed when he mentioned Trump, while a convention-goer who called for "Donald Trump to go f--- himself" was met with widespread applause.

...

Whoa: Rightwing crowd turns on Trump in stunning display

At that rate, she would've been a crap POTUS. Almost as bad as the Orange Foreskin.

Justice Alito torched for another extremist 'MAGA battle flag' by Senator Whitehouse

MSNBC

"Democrat Senator Sheldon Whitehouse discusses the two 'MAGA battle flags' flying at Supreme Court Justice Alito’s homes as he refuses to recuse from cases involving Donald Trump and Jan. 6: 'It really capsulates all the problems we’ve had with this rogue Supreme Court and its refusal to accept any rule of law.'"

A con men should know how to read the room.

The Guardian: ‘No wannabe dictators!’: Donald Trump booed at Libertarian convention

Donald Trump, the former US president, has suffered the rare humiliation of getting booed and heckled during a raucous speech to the Libertarian National Convention.

Trump’s rocky ride at a Washington hotel on Saturday night, including cries of “Bullshit!” and “F*ck you!”, underlined the challenge that the Republican presidential nominee faces to broaden his appeal both left and right on the political spectrum.

“The fact is we should not be fighting each other,” Trump pleaded. “If Joe Biden gets back in, there will be no more liberty for anyone in our country. Combine with us in a partnership – we’re asking that of the libertarians. We must work together. Combine with us. You have to combine with us.”

The appeal went down like a lead balloon as delegates booed, jeered and shouted insults. It was a stunning rebuke for a man who has become accustomed to cult-like rallies where his every word is cheered to the echo.

The Libertarian party, which prioritises small government and individual freedoms, typically gains 3% or less of the national vote but its members could yet prove crucial in swing states this November. Trump’s clumsy attempt to court them resulted in him scolding them instead.
...
The ex-president claimed that much of his record was libertarian, citing examples such as tax cuts, slashing bureaucratic red tape, cancelling and defunding federal diversity, equity and inclusion programmes. He promised to appoint Libertarians to a taskforce to “rapidly review the cases of every political prisoner who has been unjustly persecuted” by Joe Biden’s administration.

Trump said: “As everyone knows, it will be my great honour to pardon the peaceful January 6 protesters or, as I often call them, the hostages. They’re hostages. There has never been a group of people treated so harshly or unfairly in our country’s history. This abuse will be rectified and it will be rectified very quickly.”

“And if you vote for me on day one I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht.” The room, where many had been waving “Free Ross” signs, erupted in roars and whistles of approval. Ulbricht was the founder of Silk Road, an online marketplace for the sale of heroin, cocaine, LSD and other illegal drugs, who in 2015 was sentenced to life in prison.

The one common factor I seem to see a lot is that they're all people who have sufficient means to look after themselves (housing, health, schooling, etc) that they don't care about anyone else less fortunate than them.  And by "means" I don't just mean the obvious being rich, it could be someone who lives on a farm in a self-sufficient manner and homeschools their kids, the main thing is that they don't recognise that there are others who need assistance from the government.

Thinking of them as "the greedies" mostly puts their world view into perspective.

I think it's more "I work hard to look after myself and my family why can't they do the same". They don't necessarily want more than they need which is what greedy is in my book. They struggle to understand there may be circumstances where others may need help. That's not being greedy per se.

Maybe "selfish" is a better term.  I didn't mean it in the sense of wanting more than they have/need but more "I'm OK and that's all that counts".

CNN had a piece on Trump's appearance at the rally too: https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/25/politics/libertarian-party-trump-convention-speech/index.html

For once, the orange buffoon found himself in the middle of a crowd that he couldn't win over, even with a few supporters there - aside from the brief interlude where he talked about freeing that hacker (who I must admit I hadn't actually heard of until today).

kingdragonfly: A con men should know how to read the room.

Trump left the stage after 34 minutes, marking one of his shortest campaign speeches to date.

Maybe he finally did learn to read the room, at least that one 😀

The NY Times - Trump’s Post-Verdict Playbook: Anger and Retribution, Regardless of the Outcome

26 May 2024

The verdict in former President Donald J. Trump’s criminal trial remains a mystery, at least for a few more days.

Less of a mystery is what Mr. Trump will say and do after it is announced - whatever the outcome might be.

If the past is any guide, even with a full acquittal, Mr. Trump will be angry and vengeful, and will direct attacks against everyone he perceives to be responsible for the Manhattan district attorney’s prosecution.

He will continue to level the attacks publicly, at rallies and on Truth Social, and privately encourage his House Republican allies to subpoena his Democratic enemies.

The pattern is firmly established: After Mr. Trump escaped impeachment twice ... he immediately went into revenge mode - complaining about the injustices he was forced to endure and urging his allies to investigate the investigators.
