A new book is being released on Wednesday (our time) that looks at Biden's decision to run again and how it took him so long to drop out after that (awful) debate.

I remain surprised to this day that Biden thought he could run against the orange buffoon last year and still win.

Sadly, he's been diagnosed with fairly aggressive cancer.

I think it's sad that he'll be largely remembered as an old bumbling fool, when he has actually been a long-time politician with quite a storied career.

Very sad indeed, my 2c is that is probably a consequence of being in such a highly visible role as President - when he was a senator most people didn't really pay attention to what he voted for/against. But President? Everyone (around the world, even) sees that one, and I agree with you - that's what he'll mostly be remembered for 🙁

I won't remember him for being old and feeble. I will remember him for the shameful and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and the abandonment of the people there.

It was an American policy aim for some time through several administrations. The timetable and related agreements were made during the Trump administration.

Biden actually withdrew later than the Trump administration planned. Imo, the most the Trump administration would have achieved in comparison would have been a few rounds of face-saving bombing on the way out with almost no material difference except casualties.

If it's fair comment I think you can plausibly pin it on several administrations.

Something like that disease has an enormous stress on the immune system. That to me is a more plausible explanation of Biden's obvious tiredness at points during the campaign. Imo Trump really got to him mentally as well which didn't help.

I'm not medical professional in the least but imo this progression would likely have been detected much earlier. It does raise the usual questions about presidential medical exams which everyone believes are more or less malleable for any president past or future.

Number of presidential candidates disqualified for medical reasons by official doctors basically = zero. If presidential candidates were assessed by a board of doctors better than nothing it would probably just be stacked in advance anyway. Paging Dr Oz..

Interestingly, Nikki Haley - who was running for president last year - suggested something similar to this (when the leading candidates were the orange buffoon and Biden) but got shut down:

It does tend to be proposed when doing so would provide a tactical advantage to the person proposing it. Nikki Haley being 50 or under at that time and hoping for a knockout.

The USA having a constitution created in the time of King George III for benefit of brand new land of new America has similar problems. The UK has moved on and has new constitutional arrangements effectively. The USA has not:

The advantage of a 'Prime Minister'.
Members of parliament should always be in position to rotate another Minister into the 'Prime' Minister spot.
What does it say about your party if its so shallow another Minister can't.

Largely with exceptions, apart from a bit of excitement over who backstabs who, we all settle down and don't panic.

I shudder whenever a certain constitutional law firm in Wellington suggests we should have a separately elected President.

We already (to a point) elect a party based on its leader, certainly more so in the era of Key and Ardern, a president isn't really that much of a stretch
