That's a fairly long way from nothing much will happen. I'm curious to know what caused you to move in that unreserved direction. I may have missed something..

Some say a week is a long time in politics. A week in Donald Trumps reality is an eternity, a lot has happened and after revision and reading (wife in China, I was bored) I have come to the realisation that my initial position was wrong.

Christopher Steel has decided to keep a low profile.

On the surface a very wise move - given what Putin can arrange with Polonium 210.

His report about Trump is either (mainly) true or it's (mainly) untrue.

Assume that it's mainly untrue, then WTF could have inspired Steel to "fabricate" such a wild story? My guess is that he probably didn't, but was probably fed what he thought was credible by an informant on the Russian side. Then why would Putin do that? (presuming he was involved - likely IMO). Probably to mock and discredit.

Steel will probably know exactly what happened there. I doubt Putin is a real threat to his safety, Steel has served his purpose and now he's finished, time to write his memoirs (that will have zero credibility).

Then again the report could be (mainly) true.

I believe Trump is an arrogant fool, but I don't think he is completely stupid. He is crafty enough to know better than to place himself in a compromising position in Russia. Of course he is also impulsive and capable of anything, but I doubt he got up to anything blackmailable of a sexual nature on his visits there. As someone used to backhanded deals in the business world, I just think he would know better, like a rat that knows to avoid a trap. The illegal donations issue sounds much more promising to me. I don't doubt there is dirt there, though whether it can be proved may be another matter. In any case, Trump has already succeeded in significantly lowering the esteem of the USA in the rest of the world. One day historians will say this was the moment when the American empire started to crumble.

Very plausible that the sources Steel got his information from were in on it with Putin (perhaps well rewarded for doing so) and that it's just another way for Russia to undermine the US public's confidence in their media and democracy. Maybe they feed information they can categorically prove as untrue (like certain people alleged to be in certain places and certain times). Prove some of it as until and the rest will never been seen as credible, and all the media outlets that reported it will be slammed for a long time for talking about a false report, and it will be used at every opportunity by Trump to discredit whatever they say he doesn't like. Just as he has been doing with the IC's conclusions on Russia, continually pointing back to WMDs to discredit what they say he doesn't like.

Anti-US sentiment has been around a long time. One needs to be careful to assess motives for that. Despite serious failings and blunders, the USA has generally worked to protect and promote democracy and freedom. I suspect that despite "Trump" and the rise of the alt:right, half of the world's population (more probably) would choose to emigrate from where they are to the USA - because of the relative freedom and opportunity it offers.

Top of my mind in saying that was thinking back to anti-US sentiment at the end of the Vietnam war era, Nixon, recession. I'm confident that people would have been saying the same "one day historians will say this was the moment when the American Empire started to crumble". I'm glad it didn't.

You make a good point but in my view America has been increasingly failing to walk the talk. There seems to be a willingness to compromise its so-called principles whenever it is expedient to do so. I agree that there is no better defender of 'Western values' on the horizon at the moment. I am not at all anti-American. I just wish they would do a better job of living up to their promise.

Trump is somewhat smart. I mean he managed to get himself into the position he is in, beating out others, I mean the way he went about it was absolutely bizzare, however he managed to pull it off. I bet you Michael Bloomberg and a few others are regretting not running for president.

Like I said a few pages back, the democrats are starting to hurl rocks this week, last couple of weeks they been throwing stones. Trump will be inaugurated though. A lot of the claims and news about Trump is untrue. If the GOP is really in control (which I believe they are where most of the power lies), then you may see him impeached in favour of Pence (who the GOP feel they can control/persuade). But they wont jump on the impeachment wagon just yet. They will start steering Trump in directions, and IF they don't like where things are going, they will drop the dirt and impeach him, the GOP knows the democrats will jump on that bandwagon. But if the GOP is getting what they want, then they will keep Trump.
