we have had many ministers from both sides who take over a roll in which they have had little or no experience Some have been successful some have been complete failures. This is the same in the business world some get promoted to positions that they make a complete failure of. You may say JA may be a gamble but she seems to very strong person who has already shown she will take no nonsense from people who step out of line. What did BE do when PB stepped over the mark, fudge all. Just the same when he fudged around over the texts and Todd B affair.

Just look at our Deputy Prime Minister, Paula Bennett. Is that the kind of person you'd like to see as a Prime Minister? Because that's not the kind of person I would want as a Prime Minister.

Jacinda. Well, some would prefer she just jump straight into it. Kinda like applying for the CEO role without any previous experience. The worst part of it, no financial/economics experience either.

Some people do it by being a leader and getting accomplished people to lead their practices. Like a Prime Minister getting the right people for the departments and minister roles.

I especially don't trust the current and previous Prime Ministers answering direct questions with a "I don't remember". What other things will they change their minds on?

I would suggest you might in this situation but plenty of other discussions have seen you take a different stance.

Paula Bennett makes me squirm for some reason..maybe its her artificial smile or maybe its what she did in the first few years as Government to Housing NZ and then the welfare system. Don't get me wrong not all the things she did were wrong....

The news was already gleefully pointing out every point she rose in the preferred PM stakes. Any deputy has to downplay any ambitions they might have for the top job, that's just common sense.

Bill English was asked the same question in 2009 and answered:

Embattled National deputy leader Bill English says he will "never" challenge John Key for the party leadership.

English's remarkably categorical pledge of loyalty follows a week in which he was secretly taped criticising his leader and it was revealed that Key expected English to try to roll him.

Key told press gallery television journalists Guyon Espiner and Duncan Garner while socialising this year that he expected English to try to replace him, the Sunday Star-Times reported last week. A Key spokesman said the leader had denied making such comments to the pair.

English told the Sunday Star-Times he was happy to flag the possibility of being leader for the rest of his political career and he would never challenge Key for the job: "No ifs, no buts, no maybes."

Incidentally that's a fascinating little story that I'd totally forgotten about. The prospect of anybody rolling Key in 2009 now seems pretty laughable.

Why someone wants the top job can matter more than how much they want it. Maybe one person wants to feel important and in control. Maybe another wants to help the country. Simply wanting it doesn't say much to me.
