MikeB4: Kelvin Davis was a teacher, Principal before entering politics, I am sure knockers and smug pack will have lots of negatives about that too.

I wouldnt knock someone for their past job. I only concentrate on their competence in their current role and this guy has screwed up since first becoming Government.

You forget his greatest achievement, he knocked Hone Harawira out of the Beehive.

Perhaps he can knock Winston out next. Oh wait, actually forget that, because that would mean the end of government.

Not really NZ First has 9 MPs and given that Winston Peters is a list MP and top of their list that is only going to happen if they poll below 5% and don't gain an electorate seat.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

New regs enable random inspection of dementia care providers:

NZHerald: The Office of the Ombudsman will have the power to randomly inspect about 180 privately-run dementia facilities, including those contained within aged care facilities and rest homes, in changes gazetted by Justice Minister Andrew Little this week.

Most of the time when people say that capitalism has failed in NZ, they are referring to the housing and rental markets. But those markets are not an example of true capitalism. As in a true capitalist market, if the existing players are charging too much. New players can easily enter the market with cheaper pricing.

That does not apply to the housing market. As the councils control exactly what can be built and where. And they add on lots of extra compliance costs that add little value to the end result.

Have a look at http://www.aucklanddesignmanual.co.nz And imagine that you are living in a cold, damp, overpriced rental property. Most of those things listed in the manual push up construction costs. But are of little value to a tenant who just wants a warm, dry home. At an affordable rent.

Northcote to National by 1362. I wonder what this means if anything? Coleman had a majority of over 6000.  Was Coleman a popular local MP? Minister of Health is a tough portfolio because in a sense you are Minister of Rationing.

Turnout tends to be low in by-elections, so a lower margin is not surprising.

I read Mike Hosking's piece in the Herald today (here) and I have to agree with him. Neither am I remotely surprised.

If the government has any credibility, it needs to cease further work (and thus expenditure) on this and get on with more important things.

As much as I dislike the current govt, I can believe that 19% of Foreign buyers in central Auckland's housing market could be having a significant effect on prices in Auckland.

But here is the thing - that demand should be easy to satiate by building more housing.

But that isn't happening.  Local authorities and planning processes make it hard to meet demand.  There is the problem.

Why should they make a law for the 19%in Auckland that affects only 3%nationwide? it's time to stop supposing that aucklanders problems are NZ'S problems.

Government ditches repeal of three strikes law at NZ First's request

And another fail for labour voters. Nobody can tell me a vote for Winston was a vote for labour (or vice versa) when their policies are directly opposite.

I'm not suggesting they should ban foreign buyers.   I think they should address supply constraints.

I see that Winston has waited until Jacinda goes into confinement before announcing he is suing his own government....!
