You have to get the terms right. It's a 'levy' not a tax.
But all the same it's a good idea actually, if it's just included in your ticket then it's a good way to increase revenue with little or no negative impact.
A levy is the act of imposing a tax or fee for revenue collection. But again, setting semantics aside, tourists already contribute enormously from a fiscal perspective to the New Zealand economy. Is an additional tax justified or is it simply another example of populist policy?
It will be interesting to see the details of the policy in terms of purpose, applicability, method of collection, distribution and net effect on tourism.
Pumpedd:I see they are implementing a new tourist tax???...I guess this is exempt from the election promise of NO new taxes first term.

Not a problem. Tourists can't vote...
Really...great intelligent response.
Tourism is our 2nd largest industry I believe..so fewer tourists would equal less votes.

The healthcare debacle continues, and Labour continues to learn that running a country isn't as easy as it might seem from the opposition and that they are hopelessly inexperienced.

Some interesting observations from the last 24 hours: -
Greens campaigned on a crackdown on water bottlers. A Greens minister just approved (an an inward foreign investment) a large water bottling plant.
Labour (including Davis) vocally opposed double-bunking prison cells, criticised National for that policy. Labour (Davis) just approved a new prison extension that feature double bunked cells.
Every government, labour or national, right or left, can be rightly accused of telling lies, or failing to implement election promises etc. But never has there been a government who has so blatantly acted against or backtracked on their own election promises as this one.
This water bottling issue is just another nail in the coffin. As is the double bunking. I struggle to see how there is any support for them given their disregard for the voters who out them in parliament.
You forget one thing....the Minister whether its NZ First, Greens or LAbour has to follow the law..and she did. She also clearly said their needs to be a law change to stop it.
If we have spare water instead of letting multinationals exploit it we should be sending free of charge to areas of the world where clean water is just a dream.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I am afraid this Government is extremely dishonest and appears to be following Trump like lies. What they dont seem to understand is that the truth will always come-out in the end.
They are solely focused on themselves rather than their constituents. A good article today also from Barry Soper who writes about who is the real power in the Beehive.
The economy is starting to strain under the mismanagement of what was an excellent economy. Rather than tweak where it was2 needed it seems the Govt is dismantling for no reason at all.

No, the Coalition is nothing like the Trump horror show

HAHA. Give me Trump anyday over our current 6 week PM. Trump has huge support in the US and was at least democratically elected. Unlike our Winston who has what? Between 5-7% of New Zealand's support.
I read an interesting comment online over the weekend, calling out the part that the NZ media have played. I though it was worth sharing - even if it is a little angsty:
There is a growing disdain for Ardern in the media that is normally reserved for doomed leaders of the opposition, or PMs after several terms...
There is something quite disturbing about what has happened. After 9 years of competent stable government, the media inexplicably elevated Ardern to the position where a minor party could crown her PM. Her inexperience, her lack of life skills, her deficits in economic proficiency were ignored and the sound bite of an Instagram-friendly, comms trained fake millennial was seriously taken as quality political discourse.
Now the hangover has worn off and the same media appear astounded as the circus slowly develops in lieu of good governance.
You know what Audrey, Patrick etc... you owe us a f###ing apology!
An apology for not doing what the media is supposed to do when it counted most... hold crooks like Peters to account and scrutinise a potential PM.
Jacindamania was great for selling magazines & newspapers. I guess the question is to what extent did our media put that ahead of critical objectivity. And should we really expect that of them anyway?
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
MikeB4: @Wiggum Winston Peters was elected under the current system of government approved by a majority of New Zealanders. Also, he is an acting Prime Minister not a head of state.
IMO Winston Peters has never acted like a Prime Minister :)
Watched 7 Days the week before last, there was some talk of the PM and her salary, the left lean of those comedians was kinda funny. "She is a queen and deserves every cent" was one comment I heard.
They seem to be unwilling to target her as they did National before them, despite there being plenty of material over the past couple of months.
BTW @mikeb4 I see a little of what you say about Dai Henwood. Esp last couple of weeks.
