Kingdragonfly

I see you are an optomist.
The world desperately needs optomists especailly now. :-)

On Trump and the law.
GOP utter loyalty has made Trump the law, and his Judges have given him absolute immunity.

South Korea 'eventually' did what USA cannot.
Their GOP equivalent tried very hard to give it a pass despite not having a majority.

South Korean security forces ignoring orders to use guns/any means necessary the circuit breaker.
It could have been a bloodbath, then the extrajudicial arrests, torture, imprisonment.

USA I'm not so sure, bring in a loyal unit from the south with Presidential orders to shoot first.

Can't see China backing down.
If dear leader demands austerity CCP can enforce and not brook any protest.
However National Pride will also provide real support and unify population.

Other guy can play the Nationalism card too.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff was signed into law by President Hoover in June 1930.

It raised tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods. It was the highest tariff in U.S. history at the time.

Well to play Devil's advocate, most historians and economists agree:

The Smoot-Hawley didn’t cause the 1930's Depression, but it made it worse, especially by deepening the global trade collapse.

It’s often cited as an example of bad economic policy during a downturn -- trying to protect domestic jobs but ending up shrinking the economy further.

In 2024, the U.S. economy was not in a downturn; instead, it exhibited moderate growth.

What I think is certain is Trump is unifying unlikely foes. It may even make the Supreme Court an enemy of Trump.

There was also the McKinley Tariff of 1890 which contributed significantly to the 1890s US depression.  And before that there were the 1830s tariffs leading to the 1830s depression.

So this tactic has already failed spectacularly every time it was tried in the past.  But President Musk's child geniuses and VP Trump will never have heard of any of those.

If I was living in Greenland, I'd be nervous. Greenland is believed to have abundant rare earth element (REE) resources, especially in its southern regions. Kvanefjeld (Kuannersuit) in southern Greenland is one of the most significant known REE deposits in the world.

Denmark is a NATO member, so under Article 5 of the NATO Charter, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. Denmark would likely respond diplomatically at first, but could quickly escalate to defensive military action with NATO support.

Maybe the Supreme Court will stop tariffs before all this happen

Can't see China backing down.

There were posts on Sina Weibo during the first Trump presidency with statements like "we will eat grass before we let Trump win a trade war".  And they will, while the MAGA-hatters cry when their espressos get a bit more expensive.

You also need to understand the importance of not wanting to lose face for China (and other Asian countries), which Trump obviously has no idea about it.  Publicly thumbing your nose at them is not just a trade issue but a national insult, and they're going to respond hard to that no matter what.

From the centre-right "The New Alantis" co-founder, Adam Keiper.

The journal is published by the far-right social conservative advocacy group "the Ethics and Public Policy Center." It promotes "Judeo-Christian values" in public policy, especially on issues like "religious liberty", judicial appointments, and anti-choice stances.

Adam Keiper:

"Wow. Just wow. How Trump set the tariff rates. This is blithering, staggering, mind-boggling, jaw-cracking, gums-bleeding stupidity."

Washington Post: Inside President Trump’s whirlwind decision to upend global trade

Trump won in November because many voters saw him as an antidote to their economic malaise; as a candidate, he frequently promised to lower Americans’ everyday prices. But as president, he has chosen instead to plunge the country into fresh financial chaos, while insisting the market losses as a result of his tariffs are “medicine” Americans need to take.

“Trump was elected in part to lower inflation and juice the economy,” said GOP pollster Whit Ayres. “Higher prices and slower growth are exactly the opposite of what Americans voted for.”

Far, far, far too late for buyer's remorse now - in fact I seem to recall the orange buffoon gave a pretty clear steer before the election that implementing tariffs was exactly what he was going to do if he won, and he did. As I said before, America, you made your bed, you can lie in it!

Title: “The Affordability Games”

Setting: Two crusty old men, HERMAN and CLIVE, sit on a park bench, surrounded by pigeons and existential dread.

HERMAN:
Remember Biden's economic malaise? Then under Trump I could no longer afford eggs.

CLIVE:
Pfft! Eggs? That’s nothing. I could no longer afford indoor plumbing! Had to install a bucket rotation system and rely on rain.

HERMAN:
Rain, he says! I haven’t seen a raindrop since '25. I couldn’t afford time during the malaise. Had to borrow minutes from the neighbor. They charged interest in awkward small talk.

CLIVE:
Well I couldn’t afford gravity. Had to tape myself to the floor every morning. Duct tape and desperation—that was my breakfast.

HERMAN:
Luxury! I couldn’t afford breakfast. I just stared at a photo of toast until noon and whispered, “someday…”

CLIVE:
You had a photo?! I couldn’t afford light! Spent 12 years guessing where things were.

HERMAN:
Bragger. Trump banned the concept of ownership. Lived in a house I didn’t technically believe in. Every time I sat down I’d shout, “Is this chair real or a hallucination of economic malaise?!”

CLIVE:
You had furniture metaphysics?! I couldn’t afford vowels. Had to speak in a series of hisses and interpretive dance. People thought I was a possessed snake.

HERMAN:
Well I couldn’t afford opinions. Had to rent them from President Trump. I disagreed with everything he said, but I was on a 6-month plan.

CLIVE:
I couldn’t afford existence! Was technically a fictional character in a 2026 tax document. Only got reinstated after a séance.

HERMAN (standing up dramatically):
Then how are you here?!

CLIVE (shrugging):
I bartered with Elon in a dream for ten minutes of reality. It’s almost up.

HERMAN:
You want to split a pigeon?

CLIVE:
Can’t afford a whole one. Half’s generous.
