thermonuclear:

Absolutely hilarious. What was it Leavitt was telling us yesterday, Trump and his "spine of steel" will never back down. Wipes six trillion dollars off America Inc's value, then comes the predictable flip-flop from the oh-so-astute "businessman". The only surprise here is that he's been bankrupted only six times!

Comedian Stephen Colbert

After days of historic market losses thanks to Trump's random ass tariffs, the Dow skyrocketed nearly 3,000 points.

Just after 1:00 p.m today the mad emperor of global trade decreed

Trump: “based on the fact that more than 75 countries have called representatives of the United States to negotiate a solution I have authorized a 90-day pause and a substantially lowered reciprocal tariff … of 10%

Well, thank goodness that at 1:18 p.m today Donald Trump made a decision that at the last minute saved our nation from a previous decision by Donald Trump.

Thank God, he is there to stop him from doing the things he does there.

Look I have no idea what Donald Trump is doing with these tariffs. Something apparently I have in common with Donald Trump.

But the point is economic nuclear winter is on pause for 90 days.

Apparently this is a negotiation and his policies have changed a slight adjustment from this weekend when they said

"This is not a negotiation
and
my policies will never change."

Yes that's true. His policies will never change especially his policy that his policies always change. That one is as solid as a rock. For now.

There was a a little hint that this was coming in the morning when earlier in the day Trump posted "Be cool be cool."

Not that reassuring actually. That's what frat guys say to each other when the pledge stops making noise. “Guys guys. Be cool. Let's just open the suitcase and check on Connor. Maybe he wants more Jägermeister liqueur.”

Trump was asked about the “be cool” post in an afternoon press conference today

Reporter “you started the morning saying “be cool” and just a few hours late there was a pause put in on the tariffs. Can you walk us through your thinking about why you decided to put a 90-day pause?”

Trump: ”well I thought that people were uh jumping a little bit out of line they were getting yippy you know they were getting a little bit yippy

Yeah. Exactly. Russia was watching Trump tank the economy and going “yippee! yippee!”

Trump also pondered his effect on the market.

Trump: ”We went from … uh … you know … pretty moderate today but over the last few days it looked pretty glum. I guess they say it was the biggest day in financial history. That's a pretty big change.

Yes, yes, yes, it might have been. But you know “biggest” not the same as “best.” That's why in Mother's Day you don't give her a mug that says “world's biggest mom”

There was one country left out of the tariff pause and it's the country that makes all our stuff because instead of lowering the 104% tariffs on China today Trump announced

Trump "I am hereby raising the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%."

These these massive China tariffs could be very bad experts say that while China and the US have talked about decoupling their economies this trade war has made the prospect of such a divorce closer than ever.

Divorce okay. That means China's mom and we're dad time to have the talk with the world:

“Hey kiddo. Hey here's the thing. Mom makes everything : school lunches, doctor's appointments, all plastic. So dad's just going to onshore some responsibility, okay? In about 10 years or so I promise to figure out where Gymboree is.” [Gymboree is a bankrupt child clothes store]

With his 125%, get ready to pay more for everything, with one finance expert saying things like Barbie dolls could cost more. Well who needs them? Get ready for Mattel's new product made 100% in America “ear of corn”. “Ear of corn” can be anything. You can get “Dr Corn Gymnast Corn” and of course “Ruth Bader Gins corn.”

Trump might be peeling back some of the tariffs so he can deal with one trade war at a time. Before he announced the pause this morning, the EU approved their first set of retaliatory tariffs 25% on US imports including soybeans clothing and dental floss.

Without dental floss how will Europe make their men's bathing suits

Trump's sudden change of heart came as a huge surprise to everyone especially to House Republicans. Just last night the president dropped by the National Republican Congressional Committee's annual fundraiser to brag about his tariffs. He was introduced by House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and right away Emmer could tell that the audience was ice cold.

Tom Emmer: Hello fellow Republicans. [Crickets chirping heard instead of cheers] No? Hello Fellow Republicans!’ Where are you?

Trump assured the crowd there would be negotiations.

Trump: “Don't let some of these politicians go around and say ‘you know‘ because I'm telling you these countries are calling us up kissing my ass.

[Colbert continue as Trump] “that's why I keep my ass so big. So there's room there's room back there for every country on Earth. Okay? get to this booty Jiabooty, okay? Just nestle in there like little piglets on the tariff teat.”

A PC maker just paused US sales of some of its laptops, saying Trump's tariffs would mean selling them at a loss: Business Insider

The laptop maker Framework is pausing US sales of some of its lower-end models, citing President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Framework announced Tuesday that certain base laptops were removed from its US site and their sales temporarily halted.

In response to a user asking for more information, the company cited the 32% reciprocal tariff that Trump levied against Taiwan.

"We priced our laptops when tariffs on imports from Taiwan were 0%," the company said. "At a 10% tariff, we would have to sell the lowest-end SKUs at a loss. Other consumer goods makers have performed the same calculations and taken the same actions, though most have not been open about it."

Framework isn't the first company to hit the pause button on some of its US sales while evaluating the ramifications of Trump's tariff blitz.

Nintendo, which manufactures largely in China, Vietnam, and Cambodia, has pushed back US preorders of its highly anticipated Switch 2 to an undetermined date (though it says the game console will still launch on June 5).

The British automaker Jaguar Land Rover has stopped shipping its cars to the States, citing a new 25% tariff on automobiles.

Ah but did you hear that he won the golf tournament on his own golf course?  Did you hear that?  He won.  Are you sure you got that?  Might want to write it down.

I'd like to see Donald Trump play Kim Jong Un. What a game for the history books: the only game ever played where the winners were tied at 72 under par.

Trump said his decision to suspend all but 10% baseline tariffs while hiking China levies to 125%, which caught Republicans off-guard, "probably came together early this morning" after he discussed the matter with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Trump said they "just wrote it up" with no access to lawyers. "We wrote it up from our hearts, right? It was written from the heart and I think it was well written, too," he said.

Trump’s top trade official wasn’t informed of tariff delay until after announcement: Yahoo

President Donald Trump’s top trade official said he wasn’t informed of the 90-day pause on most new tariffs until after it was announced.

At the same moment that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer was defending Trump’s stiff tariffs during a House hearing,
...
Trump’s tariff hike, albeit short-lived, was the sharpest ever according to data going back 200 years, Fitch Ratings told CNN, which would have likely resulted in higher inflation and weaker economic growth if they were kept in place, according to most economists.

When Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford of Nevada asked Greer when he learned of Trump’s latest tariff move, he said, “Well, I understood the decision was made a few minutes ago.”

“It looks like your boss just pulled out the rug from under you and paused the tariffs,” Horsford said.

The NY Times - Opinion  What Trump Just Cost America

09 April 2025

I have many reactions to President Trump’s largely caving on his harebrained plan to tariff the world, but overall, one reaction just keeps coming back to me: If you hire clowns, you should expect a circus. And my fellow Americans, we have hired a group of clowns.

Think of what Trump; his chief knucklehead, Howard Lutnick (the commerce secretary); his assistant chief knucklehead, Scott Bessent (the Treasury secretary); and his deputy assistant chief knucklehead, Peter Navarro (the top trade adviser), have told us repeatedly for the past weeks: Trump won’t back off on these tariffs because - take your choice - he needs them to keep fentanyl from killing our kids, he needs them to raise revenue to pay for future tax cuts, and he needs them to pressure the world to buy more stuff from us. ...

After creating havoc in the markets standing on these steadfast “principles” - undoubtedly prompting many Americans to sell low out of fear - Trump reversed much of it on Wednesday, announcing a 90-day pause on certain tariffs to most countries, excluding China.

Message to the world - and to the Chinese: “I couldn’t take the heat.”

If it were a book it would be called “The Art of the Squeal.”

The Justice Department removed the acting national security head from his post hours after Attorney General Pam Bondi saw a portrait of former President Joe Biden continuing to hang in the division’s front office, according to people familiar with the situation.

The Washington Post - Opinion - Who will tell Trump he’s naked?  (free unlocked link)

April 8, 2025

The president’s advisers are falling over themselves trying to excuse tariffmageddon.

Who will tell the emperor he’s buck naked? Not his Cabinet. Not his donors or corporate executives. And certainly not Congress.

After President Donald Trump launched his multifront trade war - leading to one of the worst market massacres since World War II - his closest confidants and aides have been unwilling to call him out or rein him in. Worse, some have egged him on. ...

Let’s hold tight and have patience,” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said. “The president is engaging in a strategy right now.”

Patience might be a virtue. Cowardice is not.

The Post hasn't totally surrendered to MAGA  😉

The NY Times - Opinion - Producing something this stupid is the achievement of a lifetime

April 10, 2025

What happens when people lose the ability to reason or render good judgments?

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Donald Trump’s tariff policy. ...

It is based on false assumptions. It rests on no coherent argument in its favor. It relies on no empirical evidence. It has almost no experts on its side - from left, right or center.

It is jumble-headedness exemplified. Trump himself personifies stupidity’s essential feature - self-satisfaction, an inability to recognize the flaws in your thinking.

And of course when the approach led to absolutely predictable mayhem, Trump, lacking any coherent plan, backtracked, flip-flopped, responding impulsively to the pressures of the moment as his team struggled to keep up.

Producing something this stupid is not the work of a day; it is the achievement of a lifetime ...
