gzt: NZ Herald says Luxon moved a formal motion of confidence in his leadership and the motion was carried.
Makes sense.
Luxon: here is a cup of wine laced with Iocane Powder. Who wants to be the first to drink it?
Caucus: *crickets*
Luxon: Didn't think so.

He doesn't really have a choice, he either does it and loses or does it and wins but then he has to be smart enough to use it as a policy platform for the election. Remains to be seen.
Ironically he's now in a better position than Hipkins.
I would just some policy from someone at some stage please.

Greens have come out with plenty. But if by 'someone' you mean Labour & National, then, well... indeed.

I've had Christmas wishlists where I wanted a J35 but I think everyone would agree it's probably better I never actually got one.
The Greens are unburdened by the possibility of actually having to implement their policies.
However I would like to hear from the majority party in our future government, whomstever that may be, at some point about what they have in mind.

Well in that case, you have already heard it. It'll be the same as it always is if you vote for Labour or National. Neoliberal trickle-down economics, with your choice of either tomato sauce or mayonnaise.

gzt: National has a lower share of the coalition this time. National was polling at 35%-40% in the leadup to the 2023 election. On the night they collected 38%. National is currently polling at 30%. It's not a bad position.
It’s the worst position for the largest party in a first term government since MMP came about. There’s a reason why there is so much internal and external agitation.
There’s no real reason for optimism, the Iran war has killed any chance of economic recovery.
I mean who would want to be PM right now? It's going to be very tough to stay in govt with an inflationary crisis inbound.
Mike
I suppose delaying campaining makes sense while the instability of offshore energy supply is front and center.
Economic predictions of rosy future become difficult when its going on and maybe structural change.
It being a time when the money that's going to charter schools, and tax deductions for landlords may have been handy?
Then there is LNG, a mini Think Big for this Government.
Easier to say nothing to see here if suddenly there is a resolution and offshore energy prices crash. Everyone promises never to do it again.
Trucking can keep the bigger heavier truck exemption.
Keep trucking bulk freight at 3-5x fuel use of diesel trains, and electric ones even better as its domestic energy.
Its early days for polling with campaigns keeping power dry.
Even in tough recessionary times.
ACT can say there is plenty of money if we sell off and outsource all Government departments.
A bit of revenge on Treasury that recently became a target after so many helpful suggestions of others waste.

I may disagree with literally all but one of their policies but I can't help but admire how they bent National to their will. This hasn't been a National government, it's been an ACT and NZ First government.

Part of me would like to see what would happen if Greens was able to enact some (or all) of the economic policies that they have come out with, its the same part of me that can't turn off a scary film no matter how gory it gets because I just have to see what happens next.....
When she talks using her adult brain, Chloe comes out with some well reasoned arguments for her views, I think this is why there is a certain level of respect from David Seymour towards her. Unfortunately, she lets her activist brain do some of the communicating too. You can almost see the red mist descend the longer she talks and rational / logical arguments go out the window, along with credibility. But at least she has an opinion and a personality, more than can be said for Luxon

I see Luxon staying where he is, despite his unpopularity. True, the Iran War is not personally his fault - but IMO voters always vote with their wallets come election time, and at the moment, financially a lot of people are doing it very tough.
Also I don't think any other National MP would want his job at the moment. Unless he pulls a rabbit out of the hat before the election I'll be surprised if they win by as much as they did in 2023.

That is kind of condescending. If you disagree with her ideas, then present your arguments. The usual right-wing sneer doesn't contribute.

You’re picking on this comment for sneering? Have you read this thread before?

At least it's a generally equal opportunity sneering thread.

I agree. It reminds of Theresa May.
