GV27:

As an aside, I am still on Facebook for family / work reasons and the amount of 'suggested' pages I am getting shown with clearly AI-generated NZ political content is astounding. It's definitely mostly right-slanted, but not exclusively-right wing. What's terrifying about it is the level engagement from people who appear to be actual accounts. This feels like it has gotten way more prevalent in the last few months than I've ever seen before, even at the height of Covid.

I only visit Facebook once a week to check on family. You see three posts from Friends and then a very long stream of "suggested" things, followed by one post from a friend, repeat. The same on Instagram now. You have to look up and visit the friend's profile to see actual updates.

Meta is evil, by all means.

Why would Sherman being sacked be a good day for New Zealand? What is the negative impact she has had on the country?

She's a prominent person in a position of trust and privilege who has behaved appallingly.  She has brought her employer (a state-owned enterprise) into disrepute.  Shouted homophobic slurs at a parliamentary function are not a private exchange, IMO.

If Sherman had heard an MP say those things, I expect her, her team and the rest of the press gallery would hound until they resigned.  Gooses and ganders, IMO.

If I behaved like that (I wouldn't) at a function I was attending in a professional capacity, I'd be summarily dismissed from my role. Hell, I'd probably wake up mortified and resign.  And my position is of zero public interest perspective compared to Sherman's.

Either she should go, or she should be demoted &/ suspended and be required to get some help (if she has a drinking problem).

The subsequent behaviour of TVNZ and Stuff only reinforces my view that an example is needed.

It's disappointing hat the speaker is only investigating the behaviour toward Stuart Smith and not the behaviour toward Burr.  Reporters should feel safe within parliament as well as MPs.

This year, I've dropped all social media apps, excluding LinkedIn.  I only maintain LinkedIn to stay visible to recruiters.

I've also broken off all ties with Amazon, except Kindle which I'll delete once I've read the books I've already paid for.

I'm stuck with WhatsApp, because I have to use it for some work-related stuff.

At home, I'm working toward more and more self-hosting.  It's a slow process as I have lot to learn.  But yeah, the heck with these big inequitable, tax dodging corporates.

Hmmm I sent myself a link to an article that has firmware to jailbreak most models of Kindle, which I keep meaning to get around to. The Kindle device itself is great but I too cancelled Prime Video and won't be buying any more ebooks on it. Must try it this weekend.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/593998/prime-minister-declines-to-offer-evidence-to-back-his-claim-he-was-mischaracterised-in-emails

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has declined to offer any evidence to back his side of a conflict with his foreign minister's office, saying he has "nothing more to add".

In an interview with RNZ on Friday, Luxon stood firm: "I've just told you my side of the story. It's in the statement."

This must be another one of his "I don't know how I could be any clearer, guys" moments 🤔

https://newsroom.co.nz/2026/05/02/the-secret-diary-of-a-bull-in-a-china-shop/

A bull in a china shop

Christopher Luxon said the Coalition China Shop was aimed at an upper-end market. He was confident it would be successful.

“New Zealanders deserve fine china,” Mr Luxon said. “To that end I aim to deliver a set of deliverables that will take root and come to pass.”

...

Asked about his other business partner, Winston Peters, Mr Luxon said he did not anticipate any difficulties.

It was pointed out to Mr Luxon that Winston Peters is, in fact, a bull.

So not just NZF going for the racist vote with the butter chicken tsunami. ACT wants some of that game too, with their own 501 law.

ACT is proposing a shake-up of immigration policy, with a six-point plan including deporting serious offenders no matter how long they have been in the country.

Immigration policy isn’t necessarily racial policy. Sometimes it is but I don’t think that’s a fair characterisation of this particular policy.

The fundamental problem with the 501 policy was the absence of a pathway to PR and citizenship for a large number of New Zealand citizens who had spent their entire lives in Australia. That problem doesn’t exist in New Zealand.

If someone isn’t a citizen and commits a serious crime I think it’s a reasonable position to deport them at the conclusion of their sentence. As a guest worker in other countries that’s how it works for me.

I don't have a problem with visitors who commit crimes being deported. It's the "no matter how long they've been here" that's the worry. Why bother bringing it up at all? We can already deport visitors who commit crimes. The fact that they feel the need to make this a point of policy strongly indicates they intend to do to other countries exactly what Australia does to us. Send them problems that are really ours on a technicality. Came here 30 years ago from Samoa when you were 2, never got citizenship and now you're a criminal? Congratulations Samoa, your problem now.

If someone wants the protection of a citizen they should become a citizen. If they have the opportunity and choose not to bother that’s really their problem. It’s not the job of the state to save people from their own stupidity

You're not getting it. If a New Zealand citizen grew up in Australia and became a criminal and was deported to New Zealand, why is it New Zealand's problem to reform them?

Chris does not want to talk to Jack in an election year.
Is election being postponed or something.

Reply like when Southwest Airlines shut up shop in USA the other day leaving a message.
'Customer service is no longer available'.

Q&A we asked Chris Luxon for an interview.

You may want to edit your post, it was Spirit Airlines that shutdown over the weekend.

Southwest Airlines is still alive and well.

That’s how citizenship works all over the world. The bigger question is why should New Zealand be a martyr and take our rubbish and keep other countries.

As I mentioned earlier the big issue with 501s wasn’t the deportations, it was the absence of pathways to citizenship for many New Zealanders on 444 visas. That is what caused the 501 problem.
