just a bit more info .

Trump claims to be motivated by the horrific September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, but the countries of which the 19 aircraft hijackers were citizens are not on the list – most came from Saudi Arabia and the rest from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon.

Also absurdly absent are Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan and Egypt – all of them hotbeds of terror. In excluding them, Trump is grovelling to their autocratic leaders, not making a gesture to their people.

But there's something a bit more sinister in his choice of targets.

In the 40 years to 2015, not a single American was killed on US soil by citizens from any of the seven countries targeted - Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, according to research by the conservative-leaning Cato Institute.

But the same research shows that in the same period nearly 3000 Americans were killed by citizens of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Turkey — most the were victims of the 9/11 attacks.

And oops, wouldn't you know it, Trump has multi-million business operations in all those countries.

In 2015, he registered eight hotel-related companies in Saudi Arabia, according to The Washington Post; in Turkey, two luxury towers in Istanbul are licensed to use his name; in Egypt, he has two companies; and in UAE, he has naming and management deals for two golf courses.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

It kind of makes you wish that Politics was a qualified career, with career politicians and you vote for the party, not the leader. Similar to NZ. Career Politicians are not really a good idea, and I think they shoul dbe limited in the number of terms they can stay in.

I literally have no idea what you are trying to say here.

How can you literally not have an idea? Is this opposed to figuratively not having an idea? Apart from that, this does seem to be a self-contradictory and somewhat confused statement. I think Handle9 is trying to say that our system of government is not bad, certainly compared to the US, that it might be even better if there was any kind of qualification required to be a politician (not a bad idea), and that politicians should be limited in the number of terms they can serve (also not a bad idea).

Basically saying there is no real solution as there a pros and cons with any system. . Except that perhaps the US shouldn't have a presidential system, and instead have an elected PM voted in by the party. It is far from perfect but better than what has happened. With a Presidential system, if the winner got signifantly less votes from the public , than the loser, that is a sign of a broken system.

It would be incredible if Trump (either deliberately or not) DIDN'T start a war during his reign.

coincidence that the Muslim countries he didnt include in the ban all have business interests  with Trump .

There hasn't been a fatality on US soil due to a terrorist action by a person with the nationality of any of the countries for which the ban applies, in over 40 years.

So as well as being a crook and a liar - he's also an irrational lunatic.

We cannot engage with him, that's feeding the monkey. We need to dilute the dependency on the US as much as we can. Trade especially. With that comes more and better relationships between other countries.

I fully agree with that.

"Free trade" seems to work as a pathway to closer social/cultural links between countries and stimulates economic growth, and on the other trade can become weaponised/punitive.  In a fair world, then economic sanctions - which inevitably penalise the poor most of all - wouldn't be needed if rogue actions from the leaders of other nations Russia, Iran, N Korea etc could be dealt with effectively by other means. You'd probably get a pretty good idea about how well sanctions work by asking "joe sixpack" in Iran, N Korea, Russia, and more recently Mexico what they think about Uncle Sam.

Since WWII the USA seems to have not understood why not everybody loves them.

The USA really does not care if countries and peoples love them, they want them to feel the need the USA. The world generally fulfils that desire and places the US as the pseudo leaders and protectors of the free world.

The effect of WWII was in part to replace the British Empire, which occupied the role of 'world policeman' for quite some while, with the USA.

I suspect that this was the intention of  the US in the long run as well: after all, the last payments under the Marshall Plan were not completed until Mrs Thatcher was in office!

I'm not sure Trump wants to be world policeman so it will be interesting to see who steps into that void. Not the British, who have so decimated their military capability and society's moral fibre that I suspect Napoleon could probably invade now with some success.

Yes it will be a miracle I think. I think if anything is a sign that the world is now on the wrong track, this is it.

I don't believe Mr Trump will start a war but I don't think he will hesitate if attacked.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I doubt the USA would initiate anything serious while China is the largest customer for Russian Oil as that could compromise a kompromat <g>. Tillerson would need to remove sanctions against Russia first.
Putin is by default the most powerful man in the world.

Even if the "golden shower" kompromat is wild imagination - with a few words, Putin can destroy Trump. All he needs to do is say is that he put Trump in the Whitehouse.  It matters not one iota if it's true or not.

Trump knows this.

By placing Steve Bannon (Breitbart, Alt-Right apologist) in the National Security Council and making the director of national intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs "optionals" attendees says exactly what world he wants to create.

Also, I have donated to the ACLU today.
