As for the crisis, if you mean the refugee crisis that was present way before he became President, whilst I don't fully agree with his methods and rhetoric I do see some sense in placing a 90day stop on proceeding to allow the USA and his administration to put in place policy and processes. The current administration in Washington

That - and the entry restrictions to the USA.

It's wildly disproportionate to the real threat, endangers innocent people, excludes nations who have shown to be real threats, excludes nations in which the POTUS has commercial interests, probably endangers the lives of US civilians and service people abroad, will be used as fuel for propaganda by the very same extremists he's trying to counter, and reinforces prejudices which already exist against ethnic/religious minorities within the USA.

It is why I added "whilst I don't fully agree with his methods and rhetoric". The USA should have placed a wider moratorium in entry into the US for a period of 90 days. It should not have included re entry, or those in transit. He needs to dial back the rhetoric to remove racial slurs and scare mongering and simply state they need to review their immigration procedures and policies and need time to do that, which is reasonable as any incoming government needs time to review. I also believe that things are being overhyped by groups and individual that have  interests that conflict with the current US government. I point to the not insignificant numbers of celebrities who stated they would leave the USA if Mr Trump was elected and have so far not done so. I also believe the press is overhyping things as it sells advertising space, e.g the nonsense in the press today about the utterings of a retired cold war leader warning of global war.

I'd forgotten Bill English was PM. Since JK resigned, it is as if we have no PM...!

JK probably wakes in cold sweats - after dreaming he still is PM.

After realising that Backroom Bill was the only choice he had to hand the reins to...!

CEO of Starbucks has sent a letter to all employees -  plans to employ 10,000 refugees in it's stores globally.

It's good to see some sections of corporate America stepping up - that's what will make America great.

Quite. I agree entirely with his wish to ensure, in so far as can be done, that people coming to the US are not doing so for nefarious reasons. It is a fact that the principle terrorism threat in the world just now happens to originate from one religion. Personally, I see no problem with what he has done other than some messy loose ends like previously admitted people being stranded when they actually live in the USA.

Indeed, I have to applaud him for actually being that rarest of politicians - one who really does what he says he will do. He said he would do this, so it really shouldn't be causing the made up fuss that it is. It was telegraphed well in advance.

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

But what if someone is clearly both?

It would be interesting to see the NZ reaction change if ISIS were to blow up Queen Street.....

If it was a genuine attempt to stop terrorists, he would have also banned people from the countries he has business interests in. Arbitrarily picking only seven countries is just a grandstanding gesture.

So during the Troubles you would have supported a ban on Catholics entering Britain? That would really have fixed things!

The Trump fever that hit the US has hit here too. There is no global crisis. The crisis is that the USA is being led by soemone who doesnt know what he is doing, his top staff are the same, and/or went against his policies, now they aren't, where Republican senators who are against his policy of banning moslems are now told they are weak in that topic. Its an embarrasment to the US and its citizens. He won't be taken seriously and is a growing laughing stock.

The banning policy I have no issues with. The ban when it was a policy had no date, no country coverage, no detail on exclusions. Now its here with good people excluded and some were in custody until a judge got them out. Poor, poor planning. What of the other countries that are not in the ban?? Poor. There is no expertise, no planning, nothing. John McCain said it wasn't vetted properly. USA is not a loved country, that will get worse, America will be Grate alright, grating everyone else, isolating themselves. Thats the crisis.

What's there to not understand?

“We are going to have an unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration, and there will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars. All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.”

"Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!”

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best. They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bring crime. They’re rapists… And some, I assume, are good people.”

“My Twitter has become so powerful that I can actually make my enemies tell the truth.”

“You know, it really doesn’t matter what the media write as long as you’ve got a young, and beautiful, piece of ass.”

The same could be said about the constant comparisons to 1930's Europe and its various leaders. wink

When the most powerful democratic nation in the world is being run like this it will have enormous global consequences. It may not be a crisis yet, but it's only been a week. If New Zealand was run like this the rest of the world could carry on as normal, but we're talking about the USA!

Can you list the enormous global consequences? Serious question

Trade. If he plays hard ball there that can hurt. But say for NZ, there are many downsides that have hurt our farming sector for exports. Drought, exchange rates (I have seen US rates in my lifetime go in the range .44 to low .80's) If we get stung woitn tariffs that force us to drop proices or we lose volume, that wont happen overnight, we can adapt. other countries will seek other partners, China and Mexico have mentioned each other

I don't see a war or close to it. His threats are not active aggression, they are misthought, misunderstood ideas of which he and his near cronies are not experts. It will be a shambles, but keen to hear what your thoughts are
