Democracy is also about the freedom of those who are able to construct a basic argument and who are capable of understanding the consequences of the disgusting choice of the Trump supporters/enablers to give them as much opprobrium and to express our contempt for them within the bounds of the law. Remember, these disgusting people have made a choice that will cause the world to become more unsafe, the climate to warm (and displacing more people in places like Africa who have done nothing to deserve any of this), and generally lead to more suffering.

But who cares about any of this? Just keep hanging on to some facile notion of democracy being all just about respecting some idiot's choice to cast a vote for a moron because someone needs to throw a fit.

What do you propose? A democracy that is equal, but more equal to some than others? He was voted in, thats a fact. Don't worry about global warning, global meltdown, it wont happen. He has exceeded my lowest expectations. His election winning demeanour is rubbish, he has brought that forward to his "power". His difficulty to plan is evident. His lack of diplomacy, over ridden by his arrogance, and I will fully admit I expected that to wane. I feel its a great positive that his severe lack of capability has been put forward in just the first two weeks, rather than being dribbled out over 18 months, is a very good thing. Collateral damage has been low to date, my last prediction got him to a max 14 months, I can't see that now. If he sees out 2017 I will be surprised. To date he has had little real affect on the globe, but he is an embarrassment to US citizens. They are proud, I have spent a lot of time there, and while the rednecks drinking Bud will be ever happy, IMHO, this issue might well be the saviour for a big, powerful country that is hated more often that loved. Normal and better transmission will resume in due course. Cream rises to the top, causing "this" to fall to the bottom.

Meet James Robart, the judge who halted Trump’s immigration ban

Robart, who Trump demeaned as a “so-called judge,” was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2004 after receiving unanimous support from the U.S. Senate.

Trump’s attack on Robart drew a swift response from U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and who voted for Robart’s confirmation.

“The president’s hostility toward the rule of law is not just embarrassing, it is dangerous. He seems intent on precipitating a constitutional crisis,” Leahy said in a statement.

“And now he is attempting to bully and disparage yet another federal judge — this one appointed by a Republican president and confirmed by a Republican Senate — for having the audacity to do his job and apply the rule of the law.”

Here is my take on it:
Your role in Democracy doesn't end when you vote and voting for somebody does not give them the right to end your system of government.

Just because the President was chosen by the people does not give the President the right to circumvent their own laws and constitution and erode democracy, which is what Trump is doing.

The people voted him in to run the country under their laws and mores under a democracy not to start an autocracy.

For example, take the executive order barring refugees.

A president can restrict immigration as long as does it lawfully. Sally Yates, the acting US attorney general, got fired because she didn't think what Trump did was legal- ''I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution’s solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right,” Yates wrote in a letter to justice department lawyers. “At present I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful.'' 

From an article in the paper today:

Quote:  Trump on Saturday launched a scathing personal attack on US District Judge James Robart, whose ruling lifted his temporary ban on refugee admissions.
"The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!" Trump said on Twitter.

(My interjection: Ironic when you consider who the actual unlawful one is being here)

  "The judge opens up our country to potential terrorists and others that do not have our best interests at heart. Bad people are very happy!"

Robart, appointed by former Republican president George W. Bush, questioned the constitutionality of Trump's order.   Robart said no attacks had been carried out on US soil by individuals from the seven countries affected by the travel ban. For Trump's order to be constitutional, he said it had to be "based in fact, as opposed to fiction". unquote. People are outraged by HOW Trump is doing some things (the immigration ban for example) as well as some of the WHAT he is doing (dismantling financial regulation meant to stop a repeat of the financial crisis so his business friends can get loans easier, bypassing his own state department, insisting two regulations for business get cut for every new one, using family in key positions, attacking individual reporters and reputable news organisations and making outright grandiose lies in media and social media, failing to divulge info which may reveal conflict of financial interest, allowing his children to co-mingle state and private business, seeking to suppress the press organisations he does not like and promote the ones he does, using a private security force instead of the one appointed to the president, making dubious appointments to key positions, failing to appoint anyone to others and kicking key staff out of meetings permanently such as national defence, banning the National Parks service and other agencies from communicating, removing climate change data from government web sites, to name some off the top of my head)

That's not even touching on some of Trumps personal beliefs or personal 'qualities' and I'm not sure if his polarising, destabilising attacks on truth and the media and his outrageous behaviour are calculated or not.

A lot of democracy depends not just on written laws but on a social contract between people (and government) as to how to behave, the role of the press and proper methods to enact change and Trump is trying to do an end run around a lot of it. All this in just two weeks. The rapidity of all these gobsmacking events is again another thing I can't decide if it's a deliberate tactic to keep everyone scrambling to keep on top of it all so they can't resist or not!

Here is an interesting item about the rise of ignorance. I agree with the points made here, but am amazed at them. I have always seen the Internet as a wonderful and virtually unlimited knowledge resource.
