I'm starting to like this man more and more. A little like a mini Trump, or a Trump wannabe maybe, He seems to be saying the right things. I guess the question is can we believe him? I would love to see the undemocratic Maori seats abolished completely. I'm sure he is going to win votes thats for sure.

Winston Peters delivers bottom-line binding referendum on abolishing Maori seats

He also hinted at not building any more prisons and making prisoners do hard labour six days a week but when pressed on whether it was policy he said it was still a work in progress.

I would vote against that measure. It would create unwarranted problems and solve nothing.

The stupid thing is that it now costs over 100k to keep a prisoner for some strange reason. There must be a far cheaper way to do it.

Nope, it would be a disaster. I will be voting in this election strategically, to keep the Greens out of government.

Snap.

I could live with Labour. But it's a package deal - if I get Labour then I also get the Greens. Which, given their lard-left socialist economic leanings and penchant for big government nanny statism I doubt I cold stomach. (Plus, I don't really like lentils or mung beans).

Plus, a Labour-Green government looks impossible at this point, it would pretty much have to be Labour-Green-NZ First. Which isn't exactly a recipe for stable government or considered policy making.

The risk of that could push people to look at alternatives such as GMs party (can't remember what it is called as it isn't a memorable name). That will likely lead to National getting back in, along with Act, and PDs party, which I suppose at least should be relatively stable.

I have a few ideas, but I will have to keep them to myself. My views may upset some, worse get me banned.

Do it like student loans: the government lends you the cost of your incarceration and you pay it back from wages...!

A Green coalition would be ok if they dialled down their welfare and tax policies. An increase in benefit levels is needed to help address poverty but 20% increase is unsustainable.

I will be voting for whoever you vote against, so I guess there is no real reason for either of us to vote at all.

The cheaper way is to spend money giving them proper support when they are still young so they don't become prisoners.

Except for every one person voting for the idiot greens, there are about 10 voting against them. SO you going to need another 9 people :-)

Oh, and as a taxpayer we should give certain people our money, just so they don't become prisoners??? How can you tell who will end up in prison/who not? Where is the logic in that?

Typical liberal left way of thinking. Funding things on other peoples money,

You cant spend money to keep people out of prison. Some people are just that way inclined, and there is nothing you can do to keep them on the straight and narrow. Same goes for some convicted criminals, no amount of spending will ever cure them. They will just end up re offending over and over again.

Winston is a one man band. His new Whangarei guy has already left parliament once for using taxpayers money to watch porn in hotels.

That's not at all why he left parliament. The hotel porn thing came 4 years before he left parliament.

I have an idea which requires an initial investment but only modest funding thereafter.

The Martha open put mine at Waihi - build a basic shipping container prison at the bottom. Have suspended guard tower over the centre of the pit, almost Panopticon-like. Anyone caught trying to scale the sides of the mine gets shot.

Basic supplies such as rice, bread and water would be dropped into the mine. There would be no prison staff in the prison itself - it would be self-policing.

It would be the baddest of the bad-buggers you'd send here.

I guess that means you are happy to keep pouring money down the toilet then. Seems a bit strange for a fiscal conservative but I suppose that is just the typical right way of thinking. Funding a lost cause on other people's money.

Don't ever dare try anything new or different that might actually improve things. If it was good enough for great grandpa it must be good enough for ever after. With an attitude like that, you must still be living in a cave.

The problem with statements like this, is that they fail when you get into actual detail and costs.

And, the 'lets spend more money' is the worst way to address social issues.

It seems to me that certain sectors of society need to learn that social welfare is not an occupation. How do you change that mindset?

I don't have an answer to that. I haven't studied for it and do not possess the expertise. But it does not take more than common sense to see that the current approach doesn't work. If you need a better example than our own to see that, just look to America.

Other countries, such as Finland, that have taken a different approach, seem to do better. Would that work here? I don't know. But if you just shrug and say it is hopeless and don't even try to find a better way, then you can be damned sure that things won't get better.

They are really 'ambulance at the bottom of the cliff' policies. The policies don't address the underlying problems with high housing costs. They are treating the symptoms and not the cause.

They are. But saying 'We're going to tax capital gains at 30%, remove the interest payment tax break and institute an additional land tax' is not exactly going to woo any National voters, now, is it? But it is going to need something as drastic as that to convince people to stop pushing house prices up by buying them all up as investments.

There is an element of long term benefit recipients but the reality is that is a very small percentage and the average period on income support is circa six months. Spending more money to address social issues is one of the measures needed but that increased spending does not necessarily mean

more or increased benefit payments.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
