sir1963:

But National is not offering anything either, they had almost a decade and actually achieved very little apart from making the books look good by delaying maintenance on government owned property, of keeping wages of government employees (Teaches/nurses) down leaving them to be someone elses problem later on. And I don't believe a future Nat government will be any different.

And this is the rub: This level of scrutiny is fine to apply to National for what they didn't do in Government, but Labour in opposition couldn't come up with a realistic plan in the same time-frame.

Where you sit on the political spectrum will decide whether one is somehow more OK than the other. I get the feeling National's gang plan (Strike Force Raptor Cobra Able Archer Team Alpha) has had more media scrutiny than was applied to any of Labour's policies during the whole 2017 campaign.

National has trotted out the whole we are going to break the gangs thing time and time again and the latest version I think its Version 25.3.1 is right out of the Collins books of dreams. It will not work as it fails to address the root cause.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Serious?. Since they got in its only been about scrutiny. And that's fair enough, open game and all. You hold the reins you get picked on for not steering. But not allowed to discuss the comparison of the preceeding 9 years?

The rub is its not about the political spectrum whoever belongs to. Anyone who belongs to a political spectrum is not part of the voting process. Only swing voters can impact an election. Those of us that swing (voting-wise ) want a result. Doesn't care who does it.

I have voted for every party except ACT.

Nationals get tough on crime has been tried for hundreds if not thousands of years, and has never worked.

Nationals housing stance was "There is no crisis, now sod off".

And I am not sure which is worse, denying anything is wrong, or not having the knowledge to make a sensible plan to fix it.

I met Twyford, came away thinking he is an idiot and that he had this delusional plan in his head and went "Nananananana I can't hear you" in his head every time someone disagreed with him.He really believed (and probably still does) that trampling over landlords would not cause rent increases or make them sell up.

The "affordable" housing labour is going for is reminiscent of the housing corp slums only worse. I one area 8 crappy old houses have been removed for 43 (yep 43)  one and two bedroom units (3 stories high) are going to be squeezed in. And another area close to a girls school is having 51 similar units jammed in. Within a couple of years with disaster tenants ruining the whole place (the good tenants will shift out) those areas will become unsafe. These are NOT going to be the apartments like in surfers paradise, these are going to be the tenement blocks in Harlem type blocks.

Removing the ability to move on anti-social tenants is simply going to make these sorts of places much much worse.

Twyford thinks they are going to be unicorns and rainbows.

Labour isnt doing affordable housing, thats' KB which is dead in the water. I know they have built a lot of social housing I haven't read its all slums. If they are building blocks that are affordable then they will be bought and become home ownership blocks?

You have one year to assess both, and how both improve or decline in the year

Twyford is a bigger liability to the coalition than Peters and Jones combined. I feel Jacinda Ardern would dump him in an instant if she had someone to replace him but talent is thin on the ground and that's a issue on both sides of the House.

He should have been dumped long ago, I don't know about the talent as nobody is being given the opportunity, I feel there are plenty there that could easily take his place. The world is still going to turn if he was dumped and IMO would make Labour a lot more credible and be seen to kick those to the curb who are not performing as they should be.

I'm sure.

Denying anything is wrong *for reasons of political expediency* is dishonest.  Not being able to successfully implement a plan to fix it is merely incompetence.

I'd take incompetence over deliberate dishonesty any day.

Anyway, this was first published in 1894:

it's not a new problem, and it's not going to be an easy fix.

Id agree with that. At least incompetence can be rescued by staff changes

None of these and many other issues are an easy fix. It all depends, if we will moan about anything that's not fixed, or accept that an effort is being made. Its up to Labour to improve or National to move with the times.

Aren't they the same as NZF? Trading bribes to get what they want? Mini Kingmakers? They used to be aligned left, now right, solely for their own ends, not for participating as lawmakers in our land. Id rather have FPP, keep it simple, A or B. None of these bargaining sideshows

And I prefer proportional voting.

Some tweaks are needed to stop the gerrymandering the big parties do to try and slip in a minor party + hanger oners

I missed the part where Pita Sharples got a billion dollars a year to piss away with minimal official oversight (that they couldn't just ignore either way) and then had organisations set up by party associates apply for funding to cash in on the industries they were cheerleading for at a cabinet level.

LOL.  The 4 years long and still not resolved sh!tshow in the UK on Brexit, the debacle with an extremist corrupt government in the US - elected despite a popular vote minority, and the performance of the last Muldoon Government elected by a minority here...

One should be careful what one wishes for.
