Continuing on from BDFL - Memuneh post, about LA Times editorial "Our Dishonest President"

Today's LA Times editorial is "Why Trump lies"

http://www.latimes.com/projects/la-ed-why-trump-lies/

"The insult that Donald Trump brings to the equation is an apparent disregard for fact so profound as to suggest that he may not see much practical distinction between lies, if he believes they serve him, and the truth.""

Breaking news on Washington Post about secret Seychelles meeting between Blackwater founder and Russian contact apparently to establish back-channel link between Putin and Trump.

tdgeek:

gzt: Trump meets Xi Jingping this week. Expect more trolling from Trump and 'leaks' from Spicer about how tough Trump is, and winning, and also painting stuff with gold paint makes America great because gold paint is dazzling. Look at that.

He says he will sort North Korea if China doesn't. Not sure if thats after ISIS or not. Ill put money on that the meeting will end with "It was a great meeting" then once Xi is gone, normal transmission will resume. I wonder if trade tariffs will come up in the meeting? Hope so. About time he talks to these leaders with what he talks to the media with, for a change

North Korea and Nuclear Weapons

Perhaps if Trump had the insight to look at himself - and see the blabber-mouthing petulant megalomaniac - he'd be able to get some ideas of how to deal with Kim Jong-un.

If he instead looks to his "generals" for a possible military solution, it'll be a massive disaster.

He's a full house, nothing upstairs.
I doubt he'd do anything about north Korea unless of course the nuclear threat to the US is imminent.
I doubt that because KJU is Trump's idol/role model: the bigger of the two noise makers actually.
Even if there were a threat it's to south Korea and Japan, not the USA (except for maybe Alaska, Hawaii.

What Trump needs to learn is not to offend China. If he does, he would have snapped at the tail of a sleeping bear. "Face" or dignity/pride in the Chinese culture is life and death. Offend China and China will eviscerate the guts of your next 10 generations.

Gotta say, I had a good laugh towards the end of this editorial piece where the authors equate journalism to science and law - as a disciplne that helps define civilisation.

Enjoy your laugh. As serious journalism declines, so does civilised society.

Believe me, I have been enjoying it. The way Journalists across the board try and be so pompous and egalitarian by way over-inflating their own sense of importance has always amused me. I'll include your last sentence in that - at least now I know we can blame things like child poverty in NZ on constant reporting of X-Factor, The Bachelor and the Kardashians.

Not what I see.  Skepticism about the state of journalism in NZ may be warranted, but that's extremely cynical/defeatist.

There is a problem - IIRC something like 70% of online advertising revenue goes to Facebook and Google, nobody wants to pay for "real news", including neoliberals claiming to represent "taxpayers" who want to dismantle what's lefty of state-funded news media entirely.

Serious journalism is part of a bigger picture that uplifts, enlightens and informs people. As long as you have dumbed-down junk food television keeping people ignorant and mean and stupid, you do have a connection between child poverty and kardashian-style crap. I don't believe in restricting people's choices and I do believe junk food has a place, but so do other alternatives and the current lack of balance in our society seriously undermines those choices.

In the interests of  balance, I have to report that Trump has donated his paycheck to the National Park Service!

I agree. While you can buy cheap or quality food and probably most things, what is causing quality news to miss out?
There should be a choice, no one is restricting participation in a news service. Not financially viable?

In the interests of balance, it should be pointed out that his salary is chump-change compared with the money he's now authorised to help himself to from his "not so blind" trust that he can use his position of POTUS to enrich himself.:

I'm guessing that's the most difficult thing he had to do so far. : ).

Apart from snubbing and sneering at Angela Merkel.

Contrast to today's meeting where Trump heaps praise on Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi.

Hates women, loves dictators, what a guy.
