Thanks for the link, driller2000, extremely interesting article.

But the downside of my reading is that I don't think I'll ever sleep soundly again.

The Trump business is disturbing enough, but the Guardian article reveals that a much bigger and more dangerous threat lurks under the floorboards of the global stage and is steadily eroding the foundations of democracy in every country that supports the system.

I'm reminded of the old adage - 'Always remember the Golden Rule: Whoever has the Gold makes the Rules'.

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

Yeah, quite unsettling. But that's what you get for "free" services - your identity, your "id", your sovereignty, has all been packaged up and sold. Your FB likes, your tweets, your google searches, browsing history,  your magazine subs, etc, all packaged up, and sold, and fed back to you as positive reinforcement of the things you tweet and like. Operant conditioning.

The elections are being manipulated by contractors to the governments, and done so to get around any silly electoral laws that stand in their way. Governments are beholden, private contractors are not.

There are so many threads of unsettling discontent - I feel I am seeing things that are not right at the fringes, but it gets too big to comprehend properly. I follow a thread, and then it starts tying up into other threads. Food, consumerism, medicine, etc.

Time for a double layer on my alu-foil hat ...

Good article. I'm a lot less pessimistic. France had a similar election experience, twitterbots, Facebook bot campaigns, + hacking. Le Pen lost. Not by enough, but enough to give a chance for something anyway.

I enjoyed the article. But its 100% one sided. I could read one that is the other way, balance is good.

But so far, his out there antics and behaviour have been kept in check. I dont expect that to change, but it could, so a concern. But checks and balances have worked well to date.

Sleep soundly!

Comey was getting too close for comfort and the FBI is now run by Trump! I'm not too sure why many people are acting so surprised.

From Trump's letter to Comey:-

"While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur ............... that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau".

Yep Comey was getting too close to revealing the connection between Trump and Russia.   Now they'll install a Trump friendly FBI director so it will all go away.  Talk about a corrupt POTUS.

In fairness, Comey's handling of the Clinton investigation (especially his public announcement just 2 weeks prior to the election) was very bad.

Trump is, of course, grabbing the opportunity to replace him with one of his cronies with both hands.

How to Build an Autocracy

The preconditions are present in the U.S. today. Here’s the playbook Donald Trump could use to set the country down a path toward illiberalism.

"It’s 2021, and President Donald Trump will shortly be sworn in for his second term. ..."

“The benefit of controlling a modern state is less the power to persecute the innocent, more the power to protect the guilty.”

Of the actions of Mr Trump to date the firing of the FBI Director is an obscene abuse of power and does not bode well for US democracy and possibly Western Democracy. It is a further step into a dark zone for this planet that I worry will not end well.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I am at the point where I am less worried about North Korea getting Nukes than I am about the USA having Nukes.

Comey's flip flopping seemed like the behaviour of a man being blackmailed by both sides simultaneously. Weird. Comey fired, weirder.

Well let's hope none of the institutions burn down. Or any other type of events that could give him and his men free reign..
