Anybody - foreign leader, diplomat, business person, whoever - better be aware that POTUS secretly records private conversation, then when it suits him, the POTUS may threaten to use those recordings to blackmail them.

Totally unacceptable.

Not just the US President. This will be wide spread.

Nixon found out that taping can backfire.

It's not the secret recording that's the main problem here IMO - it's the use of them by the POTUS to threaten/blackmail Comey into silence. Trump seems to have established that not only does he secretly record - but that he's prepared to use those recordings to hold a gun against the head of someone.

That's also going to backfire on him, as who the hell would want to have an open and frank discussion with someone who behaved in that manner?

Sure, the law's a bit slack in NZ WRT covert recording, but if you had recorded something covertly, then tried to use that recording for blackmail, then you'd be dead meat.

Mr Obama was one I feel one could have an open a frank conversation with. I don't believe Mrs Clinton would be one to talk openly to. As for Mr Trump you would need to first determine what Mr Trump you were talking to even then the multitudes of covert agendas would make the whole thing pointless.

Watching "Get Me Roger Stone" on Netflix. Stone initially had a leading role in Trump's campaign. He's been around a long time. He also had a role in the Regan campaign. Then Bush. Lots of past and present interview time with Stone and Trump.

Regardless of the legality of any recordings, or even whether any such recordings exist; isn't this a clear case of the POTUS publicly blackmailing someone? Surely that's illegal?
