It is indeed messy, but it is not interesting.

I can't be bothered trying to bypass Stuffs stupid geo blocks. Is there lots of talking over each other and no real information?

The lack of moderation has been annoying in the other two debates.

MikeAqua:

If you buy property today, the brightline period is five years.  How long would you want it to be?

IIRC individuals and companies only have to keep tax records for seven years - would this be an absolute maximum period for CGT then?

Could be worse though, the green want to impose a wealth holding tax on unrealised capital gains.

The dissenting TWG report suggested 10 years, from memory, would achieve most of the outcomes you would be seeking by imposing CGT on property transactions.

There are current income tax provisions around disposals of land acquired within the last ten years so it's not unheard of.

It becomes very unwieldy to enforce. Lack of tax compliance has a much bigger impact on the government coffers than benefit fraud but is relatively massively under resourced. Trying to drive more enforcement would end up like the speeding ticket whinging.

Lots of talking over each other in any case. I wouldn't say moderation is completely lacking, but it isn't doing much good.

Now in the break. Moderators evaluating performances so far. Both are doing pretty well in terms of point scoring but not sure if anyone is winning. I personally find Collins a bit irritating. There seems to be a permanent sneer in her tone, which I find off-putting. I don't think either one is winning or losing so far.

A news item mentioned Collins proposes to create a minister of mental health. Imo that's a pretty solid idea to bring some focus to the areas of concern within that area.

Funny, I find Ardern condescending and her tone drives me insane often.

Agreed, I think it's a great idea.

Has there ever been a labour leader you liked. I'm asking for a friend 😉

I didn't dislike Lange that much, though I was quite young then LOL. Mike Moore I didn't mind too much. I liked Goff before he was leader but thought he was a terrible actual leader. He's also, in my opinion an awful Mayor.

I still prefer Clark to Ardern. You couldn't say there was much false empathy going on there. Frankly I find Ardern infuriating to listen to in debates - the number of times she'll talk about what she has done to avoid directly addressing what she hasn't done is maddening for anyone trying to get something out of it. In a properly moderated debate, she'd be pulled up on it until she actually addressed it.

Honestly has there been an effectively moderated debate yet? Neither Collins or Ardern answer questions they don't want to, Ardern goes wiffle waffle and Collins goes fake indignant.

I think this quote from the Herald today sums up the factual nature of the debates.

Both shamelessly mis-represented the other's positions, but Ardern did it better.

Not really. Campbell was awful, Gower was more direct but let them both ramble and last night was shameful.

Next time I'd like to see Lisa Owen or even Hosking bought back. Either would be preferable to what we've had so far. Hope TVNZ is taking notes for the final debate with Jessica Mutch McKay next week.

Last election Hosking was actually very good. He's a talented journalist and when he is being a journalist and not "Mike Hosking, scourge of the left" he can do good work.

Lisa Owen or Kim Hill are probably a bit scary for the general public although Kim Hills eye rolls and sighs at bunkum would be very entertaining.

I also thought Hosking was quite good, very fair and professional, and I can't stand him in any other context.
