gzt: Ghengis was way way richer. Trump wants people to believe he is way way way richer than he really is. No comparison to Gates for instance. Gates and the like could liquidate very quickly. Trump would be hard pressed to realise 1/4 of what he claims his wealth to be. Marketing.

I disagree. It's called politics, and it happens all round the world, even in NZ. The most bitter name calling and derogatory comments one day, the next day they can form a coalition when it suits. Nothing personal, just business.

There is some talk that the GOP will block Trump using a never used before bit of legislation that would mean the Republicans would not put forward a nominee and therefore giving the election to the Democrats by default. 

 

I am wondering how Trump is going to get around all the potential conflicts of interest given his vast business holdings.

 

Whilst I disagree with his position on almost everything including his unwillingness to put a filter between his brain and mouth, I CAN understand why some Americans (Interestingly not a single person we have spoken to in 10 days in Hawaii) want him. He is moving forward in a DEFINITIVE position toward goals the US has struggled with. 

 

They may be offensive to a lot of people, but they are STRONG plans which right or wrong will change things in America. A lot of Americans I believe, feel that the US has been in a holding position since halfway through Bush Jr presidency with Obama having his hands tied and generally being against military force toward ISIL.

 

I think the GOP has realised the damage they have done to their reputation with their Anti Obama stance but don't have a candidate who is both likeable and not pretty tied up in the Anti Obama retororic of the past 8 years. I suspect they mostly beleive they don't have a chance against Clinton now and will aim for the 4 and 8 year cycles in a rebuilding phase, much like Labour in NZ.

As best I understand it, that would just affect the outcome. It's quite possible to have a Democrat house, senate and presidency, but not as likely any more because people like "balance".

 

I don't think anyone thought Trump had a chance so ignored him, thinking the hateful way he spoke would end him without intervention but I believe everyone including democrats underestimated how much the people want ANY change.

I didn't think the outcome of the presidential race effected how the Senate and House are filled, but could be wrong. I thought if the Republicians didn't put forward a nominee then the outcome would be the same as if they had put one forward but then lost.

 

EDIT: Having said that, I can't see the Republicans not putting a nominee forward. The world needs to work on the assumption that Trump will be the Republican nominee.

 

The American people are sick of the status quo, which is why Trump is so popular. What concerns me now is putting Clinton up against him, as she is as establishment as you can get - I believe she has a real chance of losing against Trump. I know all the experts say that wouldn't happen, but these same experts said that Trump had no chance of getting the nomination.

 

It's a VERY long shot, but I hope Bernie Sanders can flip enough super delegates because polls all show him beating Trump by a more decisive margin than Clinton. And it's a mistake to think that Sanders supporters will vote for Clinton if she gets the nomination.

I doubt you need legislation for that. Declining to run for office isn't illegal... But anyway - it's not going to happen. Nobody in the House or the Senate is going to give up their gravy train for a point of principle.

Unless there's a seismic shift in a large chunk of the American voting public he's toast.

 

Also remember that so far, for the most part, it's been how popular Trump is amongst card carrying Republicans. That's a tiny percentage of the overall voting population. it's like saying Jeremy Corbyn is popular across the UK because he won the Labour party election. He's not. He was elected by a fraction of 1% of the voting public and he would be crucified in a General Election.
