For those of you who have missed it, here is President Trolls latest controversial tweet:

 

 

This has been criticized by several senior Republicans, including the House Speaker.

 

And the First Lady, who stated she was going to make targeting online bullying a priority, has defended him.

 

I was going to post something about this latest twitter rant, but it's almost pointless.

His misogynistic rant probably won't shift support, one of the things being repeated in his defense on other matters - where he's intent on screwing the vast majority of Americans for the sake of handing out tax cuts to the most wealthy, is that he's a "man of his word". They all heard words like this before - but still voted for him.

He apparently doesn't drink at all (IIRC decided to teetotal as his brother was an alcoholic).  Other drugs - who knows?  He is in America, the most pill-popping society on earth, and hardly confined to off-label recreational use of prescription drugs.

If so, can be pretty sure that whatever it is disinhibits (like alcohol) but also doesn't make him feel all happy and at peace with the world.

I wonder if it might not be substance abuse, but dementia.  Many people seem to think that alzheimer's etc manifest through memory loss, perhaps confusion etc. Often not the case, inappropriate comments, delusion, anxiety, fixation/obsessive compulsive behaviour, hallucination, psychosis can be the first signs something isn't right, not "forgetting where I left my keys", but fixating /obsessing on the keys perhaps.

I know you don't like conjecture / diagnosis from afar, also "cheap shots" taken labelling Trump or anybody else with something he may not have.  But nobody in the WH is going to take the possibility seriously unless he does something really dangerous.

You mean like launch nukes at North Korea? How much freedom of action does the President really have there? Are there any kinds of checks and balances or can he just press a button and be done with it? Is there no mechanism at all in America for a Presidential recall election, like happened in California? If the conditions for impeachment cannot be met, what about incompetence, or bringing the office into disrepute, or exacerbating civil strife, or just being a nasty bully? Do they really have to put up with this for four years?

He could theoretically be removed from office using section 4 of the 25th Amendment.

Practically though - unless it was blindingly obvious to everybody that he was unable to function in his role - it'll never happen.

There would be no shortage of psychiatrists, neurologists etc,  who also happen to be blind GOP zealots - to argue that he's in the prime of his life.  They did that with Reagan.

I was discussing this with my son a couple of nights back, he cannot professionally make an assessment but he cannot say it is dementia or alzheimers or not at this range. He did feel that it may well be some form of substance abuse. He did say that it could just be his personality traits, that is narcissism etc have kicked into high gear since being elected as  *cough* ruler of the free World.

Sorry - but that's not correct in most cases.

You'd need evidence that Trump's father had a form of dementia for which there is heritability, but AFAIK there's no evidence of that and statistically unlikely (1% ?).

Some of the known heritable forms are "early onset".  Pays to note that "Alzheimer's" diagnosis used to be confined to early-onset disease, in the elderly it was just "dementia" or "senile dementia" etc.  If Trump was 50 - not in his 70s - then maybe...

Mentioned because it's no good for anybody to falsely believe that they will or will not get senile dementia based on what happened to their parents.  For one group, you'll put them through unfounded worry and stress, for the other, you'll encourage over-confidence that they'll not suffer dementia, thus they may ignore lifestyle behaviours which may have detrimental impact on their future life - be that dementia, CVD, cancers, or the whole gamut of diseases afflicting the elderly.

Trump's a bit overweight clearly, but nothing specific suggesting he's a candidate for dementia - except his loathsome and often bizarre behaviour - which as MikeB4 points out could have other explanation.

Edit - OTOH, if I was a gambling man, my money would also be on dementia.  IMO (and not an expert) some of the other personality disorders correlate with individuals who are otherwise "high-functioning".  Not to say that morons don't overestimate themselves, but not sure they'd fit a NPD diagnosis.

Unlike every other level of nuclear weapon control, the president has sole authority to start a nuclear conflict. He opens the briefcase, uses the contents to authenticate himself to the chain of command, and selects an option off a menu of attack plans. Once that command is given, the rest of the plan is automatically and irrevocably put into effect. But you're not the first person to wonder if that's a bad idea when Trump is in charge.
