She is a politician who was fortunate enough to have been selected by WP and now is responsible for leading the country, just as many before her have done.

No doubt someone will be able to find the stats, but I wonder how many Native NZ'r's in houses where English is the first language, have poor literacy rates?

My mother was an avid reader. I probably did more reading because of her interest in it. I suspect with two busy parents (my mother was a single working mother, but worked set hours milking cows mostly), the lesser level of attention at home re reading and writing will all be contributing factors.

Our kids have reading apps on their tablets, and they are required to do at least one lesson in either math or reading before recreational stuff.

Having said that, my Son has a naturally mathematical mind. Took me less than 3 minutes to teach him division and at 8 can do basic algebra. His teacher actually asked me to stop teaching him stuff because he was teaching it to the other kids!

Very cool! I took my youngest girl to the Lion Man place. (very very cool) She LOVES animals and was an Animal Planet fiend. At Kelly Tarltons, she joined in the feeding guys discussion of some fish, really funny and cute, started to semi take over what he was saying

I know this is off topic, but last year when A was 6 his then teacher called to talk to me about Alex because he had a confrontation with him. He was teaching kids how one number can go into other numbers multiple times. The teacher had been giving the kids numbers, and asking the class if it was possible for numbers to go into the another number he was calling out, an even number of times. Everyone in the class said no to this 3 digit number, and Alex said to the teacher it could. An argument broke out between the teacher and Alex and it wasn't till afterward the teacher sat down that he realized Alex was correct, not once but 3 times. He called to apologise. It happened a few times over a period of time but Alex was invariably correct. We did have a quiet conversation with Alex about the best way to raise mistakes a teacher might make, differently :)

I was concerned a fully grown adult responsible for teaching others couldn't work out if 1 number went into another, more than once :)

I am not sure, it was fairly critical of her in parts, so who knows!

I am in two minds of the announcement today regarding dropping of National Standards. In some ways I applaud it (see I do praise Labour when it's due), it seems fluffy and difficult to assess our kids progress currently, having said that, we spent how many hundred million on NS? What is the cost to go "back"? Is the money spent, going to improve competency rates by the amount spent? I recall the early days of chaos when National Standards were implemented. Thankfully I had left school at that point. I wonder if a similar level of chaos will ensue.

Teachers I speak to say they find the reporting part of their job interferes with children time, and lament the number of extra hours they spend complying with the requirements, but given our low literacy rates, that data is required to determine if what we spend is required, and if it's appropriately channelled.

Both my kids are English as a first language but have classes made up of heavily ESOL students, and I feel it has taken away from their progress. It's only really this year (my son is 8) that Alex has found reading enjoyable. Compared, I recall spending every waking moment with my face in a book. At 11 I had the reading comphrenshion of a 21 year old.

It is exciting for me to see him actively seeking out opportunities to read.

You can't manage what you don't measure - certainly applies for student literacy & numeracy. However, in saying that, I don't know enough about NS to know what the problem was. I always thought they were good in principle, but they never seemed to work as well in practice

Referring to me?

I think there were 3 or 4 polls. The standard behaviour is the new Govt excels. This time, its been static. The lead of the coalition is the same, Nats up 2 points, Labs up 2 points, but there has been no bubble. Thats what I took out of it

My opinion, is Nats are stable, labs are new after many changes of leader, its a new outfit, so its harder to give them cred as they are a fully new team.

The outlook poll was interesting though, 51% says its going the right way, 1/4 day its not, 1/4 dont know. The latter will know more in the coming months

He is unlikely to be in my xmas card list then, I have no time for unionists.

It is commendable that the teacher rang to apologise, but I also find it concerning that he saw this as an error. And that he doesn't want your son teaching others. If Alex knows his stuff, it fantastic for him and for the kids he is helping.

If I remember correctly, and if we are talking about the same poll, it also indicated a lift for National and commentaries have pointed out that in the normal course of things, Labour should have got a higher mark than it did at this point in time. I am aware of those things. But the main conclusion of the poll was that a majority appear to be happy with the way the ship of state is being steered at this moment, and that majority is increasing. That is what I was linking to. You and your main supporter keep going on and on about all the things Labour is doing wrong, or not doing at all, that are steering us into the iceberg. I just wanted to indicate that not everyone agrees with you. In fact, more and more people don't. So it can't be all that bad.
